Effectiveness of Cloth Masks for Protection Against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2

You gotta come proper, bro. It was none other than CNN who reported that cloth masks are nothing but face decoration. But you if want to believe that wearing a dirty sock over your mouth is protection, go right ahead.

Just come proper next time. Or do you think CNN is a right wing organization? lol

This is too funny. You actually think CNN (or any news show) knows more about masks than the National Institutes of Health.
That's like taking the word of an actor over an actual copier tech about a copier.

If you want to bash CNN for getting it wrong knock yourself out. CNN, Fox News, etc are all part of the entertainment industry. They are driven by ratings. This isn't 1930 when reporters would get the scoop on masks. They will tell you anything if it improves their ratings.

The NIH does actual medical research and has shaped the medical industry:
Thanks in large part to NIH-funded medical research, Americans today are living longer and healthier. Life expectancy in the United States has jumped from 47 years in 1900 to 78 years as reported in 2009, and disability in people over age 65 has dropped dramatically in the past 3 decades. In recent years, nationwide rates of new diagnoses and deaths from all cancers combined have fallen significantly.

They don't care about ratings. They care about getting it right. If they say cloth masks work, cloth masks work.

Single-layer cloth masks aren’t enough to stop the omicron variant, she said. Surgical masks can work, though.
        • “If you have a cloth mask you want to make sure it’s at least 2-3 layers, but I would recommend getting a surgical mask that actually has the filters built into the material,” Shajahan said.

Studies indicate J&J Covid-19 vaccine booster protects people against severe illness from Omicron variant
            By Maggie Fox, CNN
Updated 6:35 AM EST, Thu December 30, 2021

(CNN)Two reports released Thursday show that people who get booster doses of Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine are well protected against severe disease and hospitalization from the Omicron variant of coronavirus, the company said.

Researchers said the findings indicate that most of the Covid-19 vaccines will protect people against the worst outcomes from infection -- and show some of the emphasis on how the various vaccines affect immune system components called antibodies may be misleading.

One real-life study from South Africa showed vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization from Covid-19 rose to 85% after a booster dose of the J&J vaccine, even after the Omicron variant was circulating. And a lab-based study in the US indicated the vaccine stimulates a strong immune response from cells known as T-cells, which protect people against severe disease even if they don't block the virus entirely from infecting the body.

I see. Once you find out that the information didn't come from evil Fox News, you back off from your accusation that it came from a far right news source.

I'm getting dizzy following your train of thought.

Anyway, does it look like masks are working? Does your cloth mask seal around your mouth properly? No? Is it woven tight enough to stop the virus from getting through? No?

Does it keep spit from flying out of your mouth? You got me there.

I think you mean his train wreck of thought. But what do you expect from an indentured servant, same same thing as a slave. He only knows and regurgitates what his master tells him. And like all the extreme Communist liberals he is afraid to put any personal information in his profile.

As for me, if I have to go somewhere a mask is required, doctor's appointment or use public transportation, I have N95 masks. I do however take a cloth mask along if I going out to eat. They do make an excellent beard bib.On look at the photo in my profile and you will understand.

Re: Latest on the Corona Virus

I upgraded my supply of disposable three ply face masks to an FFP2-3D shaped respirator. 20 pieces for $25.00.

I could not find any N95 masks locally but will keep looking.

EN 149 is a European standard of testing and marking requirements for filtering half masks. Such masks cover the nose, mouth and chin and may have inhalation and/or exhalation valves. EN 149 defines three classes of such particle half masks, called FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, (where FFP stands for filtering facepiece) according to their filtering efficiency.

It also classifies masks into "single shift use only" (not re-usable, marked NR) or "re-usable (more than one shift)" (marked R), and an additional marking letter D indicates that a mask has passed an optional clogging test using dolomite dust. Such mechanical filter respirators protect against the inhalation of particulates such as dust particles, droplets, and aerosols.

                      FFP2 mask

FFP2 face masks without an exhalation valve

                      • Aerosol filtration percentage: Not less than 94%.
                      • Internal leak rate: maximum 8%.

This mask offers protection in various areas such as the glass industry, foundry, construction, pharmaceutical industry and agriculture. It effectively stops powdered chemicals. This mask can also serve as protection against respiratory viruses such as avian influenza or severe acute respiratory syndrome associated with the coronavirus (SARS), as well as against the bacteria of pneumonic plague and tuberculosis. It is similar to the N95 mask.

                      ... so a good choice.

You're confused. You didn't mention CNN in your post:
Are you guys still clinging on to misinformation? Cloth masks don't work. They are nothing more than face decoration.

To that I replied, it's right wing propaganda that pushes the narrative masks don't work.

It was then that you brought up CNN. If you're trying to prove that CNN pushes the narrative that masks don't work by citing one Dr from one show....that's exactly what I expect from someone on the right. You need to step up your debate skills.

True, he is an expert. If he's so sure why doesn't the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research have a published study proving cloth and paper masks won't stop the spread of the disease?

Oh. that's right because it would not stand up to the scrutiny of peer review. Peer reviewed publications examine the claims of any study before publishing it. Unlike a TV show that will let any expert spout off their opinion for ratings.

                              The NIH published this study:
"...cloth masks may provide some protection if well designed and used correctly._
                              https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7510705/

When an expert gets their republican blather that cloth or paper masks won't stop the spread of the disease published in a peer reviewed publication, then I'll believe it. In the meantime there are 30+ peer reviewed studies showing that masks offer some protection.
