Pfizer, BioNTech to jointly develop shingles vaccine
PUBLISHED WED, JAN 5 2022 8:26 AM EST
KEY POINTS
Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech said on Wednesday they will develop a potential mRNA-based vaccine for the prevention of viral infection shingles, collaborating for the third time after the success of their Covid-19 vaccine.
The companies expect to begin clinical trials of the shingles vaccine, which will combine antigen technology recognized by Pfizer scientists along with BioNTech's mRNA platform technology, in the second half of 2022.
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, typically develops in older adults who had chicken pox, or the varicella-zoster virus, when they were younger.Comment

A vaccine authorized in December for use in India may help solve one of the most vexing problems in global public health: How to supply lower-income countries with a COVID-19 vaccine that is safe, effective and affordable.
The vaccine is called CORBEVAX. It uses old but proven vaccine technology and can be manufactured far more easily than most, if not all, of the COVID-19 vaccines in use today.
"CORBEVAX is a game changer," says Dr. Keith Martin, executive director of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health in Washington, D.C. "It's going to enable countries around the world, particularly low-income countries, to be able to produce these vaccines and distribute them in a way that's going to affordable, effective and safe."Comment

Fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose boosts antibodies five-fold in Israeli study, PM says
A fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine boosts antibodies five-fold a week after the shot is administered, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Tuesday, citing preliminary findings of an Israeli study.
"A week into the fourth dose, we know to a higher degree of certainty that the fourth dose is safe," Bennett said at Sheba Medical Center, which is giving second booster shots in a trial among its staff amid a nationwide surge in Omicron variant infections.
"The second piece of news: We know that a week after administration of a fourth dose, we see a five-fold increase in the number of antibodies in the vaccinated person," he told reporters.
"This most likely means a significant increase against infection and ...
hospitalisation and (severe) symptoms," Bennett said in English.
Israel has played a leading role in studying the effects of COVID-19 vaccines, as the fastest country to roll out two-dose inoculations to a wide population a year ago and one of the first to give third shots as boosters.
It is now administering fourth doses to people over 60, health workers and immunocompromised patientsComment

Grammy Awards postponed indefinitely amid omicron-fueled Covid surge
- The 64th annual Grammy Awards show has been postponed.
- This year’s ceremony was set to take place on at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena.
The 64th annual Grammy Awards show has been postponed indefinitely amid a resurgence of Covid cases, fueled by the omicron variant.
“The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority,” said the Recording Academy and CBS in a joint statement Wednesday.
“Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks,” the two organizations added. “We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon.”
This year’s ceremony was set to take place at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena and be broadcast by CBS. “The Daily Show’s” Trevor Noah is still expected to return as the host of the Grammys this year.
This is the second time that the awards ceremony has been delayed due to the pandemic. Last year, the show, which was also slated for Jan. 31, was moved to March 14, 2021, because of a spike in Covid cases in Los Angeles, where the event was slated to be held. The event was also moved from the Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) to the Los Angeles Convention Center to provide more space for guests.
According to Variety, the Grammys typically require a 10-day or more lockout of the venue in which they are held. However, the Crypto.com Arena’s schedule doesn’t appear to have that kind of opening until at least June.
The Recording Academy will likely look to produce a full show with a live audience.
The Grammys generate millions of dollars in revenue, even though — like many televised award shows — ratings have declined in recent years.
Heading into the 2022 ceremony, Jon Batiste, the bandleader on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” led the pack with 11 nominations. Chart topping artists Justin Bieber, H.E.R., Doja Cat, Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo also received multiple nominations.
... not that I ever watch the Grammy awards on TV anymore but a lot of people do.Comment
