What makes for a good tech?

What makes for a good tech and how did time change?

Not everyone has the aptitude or this. These machine are really complex.
Some guys will nail it and never get callbacks and others just cant get a call closed.

If there is one character trade that can describe a good tech what would that be?

Its really awesome to be connected to you guys and i have great reverence for some of the techs here.
Here i fool around more that anything.
    Whatever

I believe, that a good tech first has to understand how it works before they will be able to fix it. Otherwise, they will throw parts into it, or count on AM or FM.
I forgot, a loving and supportive wife is essential.

Two traits I would look for are a curiosity about how it works, and stubborn persistence: not to give up unit I've tried everything in my power. It's the persistence that pulls me through most situations.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Like I've posted here before the old school techs are on the way out. Now a days "Techs" are IT guys handed a screwdriver! This is where the industry is going.

This is just one example of what makes a good tech:

A good tech will be bothered walking out of an office not being able to get the customer up and running. This will eat at them all night even when at home, in bed and when they wake up! "Real" techs refuse to be beat by a machine! And it will bother them until they find the solution. Once they find the solution they will never forget this and store into their memory for next time.

Good Tech not only has to fix the machine , they must also fix the customer
Never Say it's not my JOB!
Never leave an account until you ask the customer do you have any questions or concerns.

As someone who supervised up too 8 tech's
Every tech is different they all could do the job. Some once you showed them how to do it ,
others just give them box and they where all set.

Some where good at IT stuff and others did not want too learn.

Reading is required and Training is a must!

Agreed, I am (or was an old school tech) that retired 4 years ago. When the industry went digital, I became certified on Sharp's networking and security, and became proficient. Again, if you don't know the equipment, or the network/system, you'll have a hard time fixing the problem

              Yea nailed it.

Resourcefulness, not to make excuses or not taking the extra step to get the machine running even if you need to return anyway.

It is sad to see some of the best technicians fall out of the IT buss.
One of my older friend and very respected techs can't do the most basic tasks like install am IP printer.
But he was always accommodated for so that he never got into those situations.
His trick to this was to be thorough on his PM's and his machines was always spotless.

Had to work on a new Kyo color machine, not my thing always been strictly KonMin.
Was surprised how easy i took to it, got the manual a day before going out and already knew how to access everything.
What a nice machine. Not like the KonMin's this thing was decent and so easy to get around.
Will have to do other brands not and always had a bit of a fear for it.

Someone who has the patience to deal with IT staff who always thing every problem is caused by the machine. Users are often the cause of half of my problems.....

I hear you about the IT people always blaming the machine. I love the look on their face when I hook up my laptop and print or scan without any issues. Or when I have my Kon/Min IT guy go out and change one setting and everything works fine. Makes them look so stupid (which most are) ha-ha. Most of them know very little and Google everything! And if you really want to see angry IT people, when the big companies tell them they are now responsible for working on the printers. God forbid if these guys get their hands dirty !!!!

Yea useless. Had to go out on a Sunday afternoon yesterday because the IT guy decided to change the IP range.
Knew he buggered the machine and the scanning tried for a minute gave up and scrammed.

Could have phone me you know.

Basically the desire to work AND learn new things. An unskilled tech with a desire to learn is a step in the right direction.
