Two Canadians imprisoned by China have been released, Prime Minister Trudeau says

Two Canadians detained by China for nearly three years have been released, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday night.

Trudeau said Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor boarded a plane headed for Canada at about 7:30 p.m. ET Friday night and would land in Canada sometime Saturday.

"These two men have gone through an unbelievably difficult ordeal for the past 1,000 days, they have shown strength, perseverance and grace and we are all inspired by that," said Trudeau at a late evening news conference in Ottawa.
Trudeau would not discuss details about how their release came about but he thanked Canadian allies for their support.

Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor have been held in China since late 2018. They were arrested on espionage charges in China shortly after the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a US warrant related to the company's business dealings in Iran. However, China has consistently denied that the cases were in any way connected.

Earlier Friday, the United States Department of Justice and Meng reached an agreement to defer prosecution of US charges against her until late 2022, after which point the charges could be dropped.

The US case centered on whether Meng misled HSBC bank about Huawei's relationship with an Iranian subsidiary, Skycom, which the US alleges would have violated US sanctions against Iran.

Meng appeared virtually in a court in Brooklyn, New York, and pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and wire fraud.

However, as part of the deal, Meng confirmed the statement of facts in the deferred prosecution agreement are true.

Those facts include that she misrepresented Huawei's relationship with Skycom to HSBC, according to court documents. If she says or implies otherwise, it could violate the terms of the deal and result in her prosecution.

CNN affiliate CTV News says it has confirmed that Meng left Canada aboard a private jet Friday evening.

... Meng, living in luxury in Canada finally admits potential guilt to US charges and leaves the country. The two Canadians imprisoned in squalor are same day released. Both were political prisoners of China.

... "China ... up until now, has said that there's been no linkage between the two, but by putting them on the plane tonight, they've clearly acknowledged that this was hostage-taking," said Colin Robertson, a former Canadian diplomat for more than 30 years.

"It reminds me of the swaps you used to have of spies in the Cold War."

Robertson implied that U.S. President Joe Biden, who is directing increasing attention to China, may have brokered the deal during a recent call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Ford making its biggest single manufacturing investment ever to build electric vehicle factories

The Ford F-150 Lightning, its first all-electric full-sized truck, is expected to go on sale next year.

Ford Motor Co. and South Korea-based energy company SK Innovations are investing $11.4 billion to build two new enormous manufacturing campuses for electric vehicles, creating more than 10,000 new jobs and representing Ford's largest-ever single manufacturing investment in the company's 118-year history.

Ford's share of the investment will be $7 billion, Ford executives said. Ford previously announced it will spend $30 billion by 2025 on its shift to building more electric vehicles and that it expects 40% of its sales, worldwide, to be fully electric vehicles by 2030.

The two sites, one in Kentucky and one in Tennessee, will employ a total of a total of about 11,000 people, and between them, the sites will include three electric vehicle battery manufacturing plants and a factory to build electric pickup trucks.

The factories will begin production of batteries and trucks in 2025, Ford executives said.

Ford also announced it is investing a total of $525 million across the United States over the next five years to train electric vehicle repair technicians.

... an important facet of President Biden's $3.5T infrastructure plan is to build a grid of electric vehicle recharging stations across the USA.

Biden is planning on taxing big business?

Did you know that they are gonna raise prices and as a result this is a tax on the middle class?

Yes, raising the tax on big business has long been a focus of his political promises. The idea is very popular with most Americans.

Kind of a stretch to suggest this is a tax on the middle class.

Big business's costs are rising due much more COVID and logistic dislocations in the global economy.

How is it a stretch ? You don't think big business is gonna raise prices to offset this tax?

.. a future maybe but I doubt if increased taxes is the sole reason. You are seeking a political axe to grind.

Why is it every time that I raise a point that I'm being unreasonable or have an axe to grind?

When cost goes up for business (cost of goods or taxes) they must make up for the loss of revenue. It's Economics 101.

PS - You're being dishonest about it just like the liberal politicians.

... you should be way more concerned over what is going to happen to the USA if it defaults on it's debt obligations by Oct 18th due to Republican foolishness in the Senate.

What's the first rule when you're in debt? Stop digging that hole deeper.

                      What is Biden proposing?

If I had a dollar for every time that a democrat has made this promise, I'd be a rich man.
