Both Canon and Nikon are going to have to raise prices by 24 to 49% ! This will only apply to customers in the USA.
Since most of their manufacturing is in Japan, and Vietnam, and China the tariffs will be steep. Cameras in stock now and other equipment like lenses, camera bags and tripods are all going to really jump.
IF you are thinking of buying camera gear, then get it TOMORROW. Items in stock will not be subject to the tariffs.
Note: Canon or Nikon could get around the tariff by manufacturing here in America. To do that would require building a separate factory here and that could not possibly be done in under 4 years.
Japan hourly wage is around 7.50 per hour. 6.50 in China, and $28.50 in the USA.
Those cameras are going to be very expensive if made in America.
They won’t be though, because Canon and Nikon know the tariffs will be gone in 4 years.
Also, they sell cameras globally, and they are not going to build a special factory in America. We are just are not that big of a country.
China, India? Yes.
EU? Maybe.
All that trouble for the USA?
Nope.
The result of this is camera folks like me will pay more or delay their purchases. This will hurt great companies that employ Americans like B and H and Adorama, and even Amazon.
Pro photographer Tony Northrop goes into detail on this on his YouTube channel.
Note: looking at a new Samsung TV?
Yea, tomorrow.
I’m hearing iPhones may be over 3000 dollars.
