It's simply a word used to identify an ethnic group. Why does it bother people so much?

Considering that most people of latin descent don't use it, why insist on it? Latino and latina are perfectly acceptable and describe masculine and feminine genders. If you're so confused that you don't think you fit into either of those categories, you don't need a new word, you need a new counselor.
