Today, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) failed to win the House speakership on a second ballot as hard-right conservatives banded together in opposition, keeping him from winning a majority. Republican defectors backed Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who moments before the vote urged his GOP colleagues to vote for McCarthy. A defiant McCarthy has vowed to press ahead as the House finds itself in unfamiliar territory.
