Re: A living wage
Flipping burgers is fine as a starter job. Fast food chains realize that and have promotion and training programs for those employees show potential for improvement and the ambition to work for it. There are many top chefs and restaurateurs who got their start in food preparation flipping burgers, but usually not at a fast food chain as not all of them actually fry their burgers on a flattop.Comment

Re: A living wage
Here in Fl, the cost for 1 person, just to make ends meet is about 35,900/yr or around 18.75/hour..That is a no frills life style. If you want to keep people working in your state you have to pay enough for them to live there. 40 years ago, $3.25 was the min wage..you couldn't live on that alone so you had a roommate, a 2nd part time job, and you bettered yourself for your employer which resulted in higher wages. We need to have the same philosophy. The minimum wage should not pay so much that people get complacent and never better themselves. landlords and manufactures will raise prices accordingly so in the end it's a wash..You still need to start out with friends and 2 jobs, maybe you have a 3 year old phone and a 10 year old car to start just like many of us older folks did..Life was no picnic as a HS grad in the early 80's..even 13 years in the military did not significantly increase my starting wages when I went looking for a job..7.50/hr in the mid 90s..Comment
