    Started learning on HPs, trained and certified on Canon, Kyocera, Sharp, Muratec and Oki-data. Also have CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA PDI+, certified HP (APS) Accredited Platform Specialist LaserJet. But as others have stated - will work on anything if I can get a manual.

      all of them. but i refuse to work on something another business pushed out the door and doesn't show up for service. time to buy a new one

          I expect the techs we employ to be proficient at at least one make, but at times I'm sadly disappointed.
          At least 50% of IT is a solution looking for a problem.

            There are advantages and disadvantages for servicing many brands.
            advantages... most of all you have a wider spectrum of potential customers and that means more business and therefore more income which equals more profit and if you share your profit, your employees will be more happy and a win-win situation.
            disavantages... techs have to carry more parts, more time to research, more dealer authorization, more human memory. your parts warehouse database becomes huge and parts machines stock bigger. more disgruntled techs, especially slower ones. of course there are many more factors, but this is what i can think of now.

            I would say four to five brands is sufficient with two out of those being more dominant in numbers.

              Me only started working as a tech 3 months ago. I had no real relevant experience prior to this... but in 3 months I've had to work on variety of printers and copiers, label and receipt printers, Duplo machines, Pitney Bowes folder/inserter and franking machine, paper shredders and recently a barcode scanner too

              It can be pretty hectic, especially for a scrub, but I really enjoy learning about all these different machines (also have pretty good guidance and OJT). Certainly seems more interesting than being bound to one brand of machine

                I have taken on the task to work on anything. My bread and butter is Xerox as I was with Corporation for 14 years and went on my own as a contractor once I maxed out on certifications up to 90ppm bw, color and WF. Over the years I have taken on calls that I have no idea what it was until I got there. IE get a work order for a small Xerox desktop and it turns out to be a KM 750 or Sharp 1100, shame on a-holes for taking a cheap contract thinking they were fax machines, first service call on both were maint kits. No one in the office had ever seen these machines in a tech environment so of course I had to work my way around them. I have always lived by I have to constantly keep up to date on my certs as no one else will and if anything happens I have to sell myself to another company, boss man won't.
                I barter service calls for certs, example I am a contractor certified on Xerox, Kyocera, Canon WF with knowledge in other manufacturers, I am friends with 90% of dealers/ repair centers in my tri state area and we work things out with certifications and manuals. I will help your tech onsite for $0 as I want that card in my back pocket when I have an issue, I can call on them. I have no problems calling in a company to service a machine if I am not able to fix and I will learn from that call for the next time. All of my KM, Toshiba, Oce came from helping out other companies and asking a lot of questions. Funny thing as I am writing this is I had to drive 2.5 hrs last week to pick up a VCR (yes a VCR) to bring back to the shop for repair for an out of state client, I stopped by the Thrift Store, picked one up, swapped power supplies, delivered it back and saved myself 7 hrs of driving.
                As a contractor I have the ability to pick and choose my work and I do not turn anything down if the price is right. Currently my service territory covers 4 states in a 300 mile radius. So if you need something repaired in the Washington DC, VA or MD, just PM.

                  i work on ricoh (2015 Prestige Certified), sharp(Gold Certified), samsung(Certified on 5 or 6 models), kyocera (basic certification), hp.

                    We primarily sell, Canon, Samsung, Ricoh, and HP. But we service Kyocera's as well. I'm the most knowledgeable in the Canon IRA's and the new Samsung X7600's and X4300's.

                        I started working on HP [Accredited Platform Specialist APS LaserJet], from there I trained on Canon, then Kyocera, then Sharp. But I work on anything I can get a manual for, Paper Shredders, Paper Folders, faxes, Brothers & Lexmarks. After you get the covers off, much of what is inside is the same. Live (more) and Learn (more)!

                            We are a Ricoh and Konica Minolta dealer, and when Impact takes over on Jan 1, we'll be a Kyocera dealer, too.
