WSD has been causing water mark dialog recently. I disable it on Kyocera copiers and printers. Windows updates have in past completely deleted driver, turns on wsd port and installs Microsoft ipp driver in its place on Windows 10 and 11.

WSD should be abolished on commercial grade printers, as it causes nothing but problems. Sharp seems to now disable it by default, but with Kyocera, I had an issue once where an HP driver package decided to make it's own Kyocera WSD driver, and the machine had no idea what to do, and would just sit at an error state.

With WSD, we have been turning it off for years, and have mitigated a bulk of issues we used to have all the time it seemed. As you'll see from this whole thread, copier tech's HATE that protocol.

Web Services on Device (WSD) is a Microsoft API and therein lies the problem. It belongs to the almighty Microsoft.

The only use I've found for WSD is scanning. It makes detection much easier than TWAIN and a simple WIA driver gives scanning options that aren't available directly from the device.

Case in point: it will allow Ricoh devices to scan to PNG, a lossless format, as opposed to just JPG or PDF. For a few customers this has proved invaluable as they can better edit the output files.

We setup our devices with WSD Scan & Print turned off (Enhanced WSD needed by network fax drivers). however, one small city that replace all their devices with Kyocera started having random printers show up and disappear at clients PC. Turns out that even with WSD print off, if you don't turn off Bonjour, the Bonjour printer name will show up with WSD port.

Turned off Bonjour on all devices. problem went away. Very weird.

Actually Windows 10 can and does auto-install WSD enabled printers it detects. There is a safer simpler solution. I don't know if there is a group policy for this, but this is what I disable.
In Settings, go to Network & Internet, find Network and Sharing Center, go to Change advanced sharing settings and uncheck Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices. Alternatively, if you have Network Discovery disabled the same result happens. This applies to all user profiles on the workstation.

It's a protocol so you'll need to disable it from the device as opposed to the computer. The computer is a passive device. The current ADMX templates offer nothing to disable it, though there are registry keys to prevent Windows from replacing a TCP/IP device with a WSD version that can be pushed.
