I had a customer once who was an insurance agency. Their website name and local domain name were almost the same, .com and .local. The printers didn't care but if you forgot to set the domain for a new computer as .local, client software on the computers couldn't find the database engine.

The worst thing that a org can do is use a non-standard TLD like .local. I've had the hassle of having to clean up domains like that at least three times.

The same customer that I set up the server for is wanting me to set something up where they can access their files and folders remotely. Thanks to rthonpm I have some options.

I've been playing around with redirecting known folders to One Drive and I've just begun to learn Share Point. Both are pretty incredible. It makes me wonder if physical servers are on there way out.

I'll post some updates one I learn more about Share Point.

Keep in mind that SharePoint and SharePoint Online are two different animals. In 2021, I'd only recommend SharePoint Online through Microsoft 365.

To make things even easier for most of our customers, we've been using Microsoft Teams as the front-end for their SharePoint groups. It makes it much easier for them to manage their own files, and with some customers they never need to leave Teams to do most of what they need.

Yeah, I found out the hard way that SharePoint & SharePoint Online are 2 different things.

I'm starting to get familiar (a little bit) with SharePoint Online. It was very confusing at first but I'm starting to get a feel for it.

This is just my opinion after playing around with it for a few hours. If a man/woman can master SharePoint and implement Microsoft Teams, they can make some good money because I'm almost positive that a lot of companies would pay to have it set up.

My life must be pretty boring because I find myself getting way too excited about SharePoint & Redirect Known Folders to One Drive.

Why would anyone want a physical file server when they can have SharePoint?

There are some file types that SharePoint doesn't do well with, and not all files are good candidates for its use. Even though most of my company's files are in SharePoint online, we still have an on-prem file server for things that are only used in the office, like software install files, backup images of customer computers we service, etc.

I've spent several hours on SharePoint today and I finally feel like I'm making progress. I finally figured out how to grant permission to folders much like is done with Server 2019. I wouldn't say that setting up SharePoint is easier or more difficult than Server 2019...it's just different and takes some getting used to. Overall, I find it to be user friendly but like everything...there's levels to this stuff. I plan to keep at it until I feel like I've gone far enough with it.

I'm done migrating all of the files from the customer's Server 2019 to their new SharePoint site. At first, I didn't like it because it was new and I didn't understand anything about it. After I understood it, I began to like it more and more. Now I love it.

There are some unique benefits to using SharePoint for the customer. They can easily add or remove users and grant the correct level of access.

One really cool feature is the customer can restrict assess all the way down to an individual document. Also, 2 or more users can collaborate on a document and you can see the changes being made in real time and it lets you know what user is making the changes in real time.

This would be easy to sell to any company that's not using it. Easy. Very easy to sell. Like taking candy from a baby easy.

Let's leave the politics in the Rants and Raves section. Let's try and keep the work related topics, work related. Tough to do, but it keeps the threads from getting hijacked into oblivion.

If you really think about it, isn't that the entire point of this forum? I figured out X or has anyone seen Y, I did: here's what fixed it.

If you don't like it, you don't have to read it. It's the same reason I stay out of the Rants and Raves area.
