    MX-2700N slow to print, ping

I'm looking at an mx-2700n which intermitently won't print. Displays ripping on the spooler screen sometimes, also sometimes takes a long time to print. Won't ping, sometimes taking along time to ping. Powering the copier on and off seems to fix the problem for a while. The firmware is upto date I reset the network card and the printer NVRAM. It is working fine at the minute just wanted to see if there was any suggestions out there.

What type of files are you printing? Does it happen on all (color and B/W) files and applications? I have had issues with bad network cables that cause problems similar to what you are describing.

    Good luck.

I would set up a laptop and crossover to the printer to try and determine if it is the machine or something on their network.

I had this exact symptom once and I traced the problem to a network cable which had been crushed under a doorway. Machine would ping, then pause, then continue ping.

New network cable & location fixed issue straight away. Jon is right with that diagnostic test too.

I also had the exact same problem with a Canon machine a few years back.

The machine had been moved to vacuum around it, but the network patch cable got pinched under one of the machine's casters in the process.

I agree, you need to test with a notebook and a known-to-be-good crossover cable.

I changed the network cable and the customer agreed to let me move it to try it in another location, so its using a different network port, but still having the same problem. It was working when I went over earlier and worked fine with my laptop and crossover. Could it have something to do with windows seven

Slow or dropped pings suggests high network traffic or poor connection. If you've done the firmware, reset the NIC, and tried new cables and the problem persists it is probably with their network. Turn off any unnecessary protocols like appletalk, IPX, SNMP. Turn off print spooler if it has that option.
I've heard formatting or replacing the HDD has resolved slow printing on some Ricoh's.

Try lowering the network card speed to 10Mbps/Half-Duplex. I got a customer where it worked better like this and the machine has been like that ever since and, although it's the slower setting, it still is more than enough for his needs.

I'll try formatting the hard drive had just tried changing ports from raw to lpr. How do I set the network card to half-duplex it sounds familiar but have never had to change it

Dont format the HDD without making a clone/backup first! You'll loose all your scanning addresses, job log data & any user files stored there.

What firmware version are you running, out of curiosity?
How big are the file being printed? I've seen many first series MX machines take quite a while to print, with 'ripping' displayed on the screen, because the file in question was very large.

1.19 file type/size doesn't seem to matter only going on customer reports, from a 3 page email from outlook to a larger cad file happens on all

                          Firmware is OK. Thats good.

Still thinking this is either client network or their hardware at fault here.

Connect your laptop with a crossover network cable & print directly from there infront of the client. That way, they will see that the machine is working fine, and they have a fault somewhere on their end.

I'd stick a switch in between just in case. I've had NIC's go bad where the speed was an issue. A switch made it work.
                            Hope that helps !

Sorry for taking so long to reply after the NIC reset there have been no reported problems. I've called in with the customer a few times it seems to be running fine. I did try running the half duplex on one of these occasions, but it wouldn't print or let me onto the webpage as it was taking too long.. Thanks for the help
