    Smtp Domain Name

hello guys, i have a quick question, some of my clients request scan to email with SHARP MFPs, howeveri will like to know if its possible for me to use the Domain Name under the SMTP settings, rather than the mail server IP address.i just use the IP address of the mail server, but always wanted to find out if a Domain Name will work, my second question is are there any tools available to get a customers email server ip address?thanks in advance.

Yes you can use the host name of the SMTP server, make sure you include the DNS settings.

Most of the time if you ping the hostname of the mail server, it will reply with the IP address.
      Hope that helps !

It's normally preferred to use the host name of the mail server rather than the IP address.

Although it's unlikely that the IP address would change, but I have had that happen already, as the mailserver was on DHCP.

If you're "locked in" with a static IP, your scan-to-mail will fail should that happen.

It's also possible that a host name could be pointing to a bank of several servers, where the IP address would be pointing at only one specifically.

All of this becomes even more magnified if the customer is using a third party email provider, where the IP addresses are more likely to change, and seldom, if ever, with any notice.

          Re: Smtp Domain Name

I have a customer that has a couple different SMTP IPs. It resolves to three distinct address, for sure, maybe more. The explanation that I got was that it was a rollover of some sort. When one address reached capacity, the next one resolved, etc.

If someone has a better explanation I'd like to hear it. In any case, yes they use a hostname, and DNS is important.
And yes you'll see the IP if you ping the hostname, but you won't necessarily get a response to the ping. Some SMTP servers do not respond to ping. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

to be sure i would normally check the setting under the users outlook to see if they are using and ISP mail or an internal server then just to check what IP it is using open cmd type: nslookup the type the name it will resolve the IP and if you do this for the ISP mail server it will tell you what IP's it using e.g mail.bigpond.com will ussually reolve 2 or IP addresses. you can also telnet to the server to make sure it's talking correctly

                BEST practise use the hostname.
