Network switch dead after connecting printer

I have a customer whose network switch died (no lights except power). When he replaced it, the new one died as well. When he got a third one, he plugged the cables in one at a time, and when he plugged in the network printer, that one died as well. The switch remained dead even after unplugging the printer, and his newest one works fine since he didn't plug the printer into it. I can't think what could be causing this . . . could the NIC card be sending some sort of feedback that's killing the switch?

does the client have the printer network cable plugged in to a surge protector between the switch and the machine?
I have seen surge protectors cause this very same issue when they go bad, especially the cheap ones.

Would be unusual for the printer to be the cause I would check the Network cable to the printer first maybe its broken and shorting out.

What happens if you move the machine to another data outlet and plug the copier into the network from there?

I have never heard of a NIC as such blowing up a switch, but I have heard of PoE injectors going bad and pushing voltage down the wrong line, I have seen shorts in the cabling with power, hell, I have even seen dead switches from mice piss, but never a NIC on its own killing an entire switch.

Is the switch of a quality brand or is it cheap and nasty?
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

Also consider trying a different printer cable (KISS).....

So what happens when you connect via crossover to your laptop? Like ddude, the crushed cable makes the most sense. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
