Scan to folder, impossible with Vista computer

    Hi, it's me again !!

Why is it difficult ( i must say impossible for the moment) to use the
scan to folder option on a Vista computer.I tried recently on a new copier
(MPC 2000 from Ricoh), i'm doing exactly the same process i'm used with
XP ( shared folder with full rights, dedicated account)
    What is wrong ?

You will need to request a special update from Microsoft. I think the issue is that Vista is blocking the machine because it won't accept the fragmented data packets that it sends.
Don't take that toner with me!

I just found this link hope it will help !

You cannot access a shared network resource that is hosted by a Windows Vista-based computer if the SMB request packet exceeds the MTU size

          Patch Not working

          Hello,

I have benn hunting for a solution for a while. My latest attempt was with the patch from MS. A message appears upon installation indicating the patch does not apply to my system. I am testing on a Windows Vista Home Premium x86 (32-Bit) SP1 laptop. I took general steps such as allowing inbound and outbound routing of SMB and adjusted other firewall settings. I do not yet have a 3rd-party firewall program installed yet and I setup a shared folder with read/write permissions from 'everyone'.

I have not yet read your PDF (TonerBomb). I will find and download soon. Thanks in advance,

          Toner Boy

Interesting finding i got when moving from one network to another. Unlike XP, what you can share on one network you can share on another, Vista changes the share property when I unplugged from our wired netwrok and shifted to our wireless network. The sharing got turned off. I had to turn the file sharing back on before I could see my shared folders again.

            HMMM...

            Anyone have any ideas why?

            Thanks

unless the new network is "the same network as the old one" (domain name the same)Vista will do this. ie connect to a new wirless network, the wizard will ask what location? Home, work, public ect, and set up rights according to what you tell it. If I'm in a hotel hot spot it's public and Vista will hide most things from "public viewing".

Another new OS from them @&%$?!!!??%@*!

This was shifting from the wired segment of our network to the wireless segment. same domain.

                Thanks

                  Vista Scanning

Vista scanning requires a password for scanning. If you don't have a password, you must use TweakUI or make another user, call it scanner/scanner, then when using SMB, use the scanner info. And make sure it has admin rights.

I wll try a new account

Thank you for your response. I currently have an admin account with a password. I will try a new account like you recomended. However, I am leaning more towards the idea of adjusting the security policies. My new problem is that Windows Vista Home Premium does not come with the security policy utility and I may need to make adjustments within the registry. Does anyone know of the directory within the registry these settings would be in?

As an extra note: I believe the reason why my installation of the packet fragmentation MS patch failed was because I all ready have SP1. I think SP1 contains the patch to fix this problem; so why am I continuing to have this problem (Unless my problem is unrelated)?

                    Thanks in advance,

                    Aaron

Workaround solution for Network Scanning to Vista

                      Hello again,

Okay... I finally decided to look for alternatives. If Vista CANNOT scan via SMB with a network folder as a destination (Or difficult to setup SMB), then scan via FTP... I know... some MS operating systems do not have the FTP service available. So, get a 3rd party FTP program!

I downloaded the FREE version of Golden FTP Server and installed on my Windows Vista Home Premium. Setup took me less than a minute and I scanned a PDF within seconds!

Hint: You must add a folder under 'Open shares' and 'Enable full control'. Also, I am not certain if this is the same with all Vista Home PC's, but I could not access the FTP server with the computer name; only the IP address (i.e. 'ftp://192.168.0.7/scans').

On the Scanner Machine: FTP Option must be available. You may be able to leave the username and password blank (this is what I did since the scan was accessing anonymously). Generally, the shared folder for FTP would need to be typed in the directory feld as follows:

'/scanFolder' - This is true for most Sharp machines.

Let me know if ths helps anyone.

                      Aaron

I just set one up to smb scan from a Canon 1032i to Vista home Porno (home office with interesting pics that open up when you put in the driver CD), but I put the scan folder in the public share then set a short cut to the desktop. I tried sharing a scan folder on the c: drive and would not go. For some reason it like it better when I sent scans to the scan folder in the public folder. I didn't even need a password, just a user name.

                        Good luck

There are some quirks to remember if sharing a folder in Vista.

Under Network and Sharing Center make sure the following is set:

                          Network discovery: On
                          File sharing: On
                          Password protected sharing: Off

(You can also turn Public folder sharing: On to allow access to the public share folders copyman20 refers to).

Setup a shared folder and make sure access is setup for 'Everyone' or 'Guest' under both the Sharing & Security tabs (Vista is actually pretty good with this, it has a new wizard that sets all the permissions for you).

I've setup many Scan to SMB shares this way without problems. Very occasionally but not always even with the above settings it may not allow Guest access. I can't recall the reason, it may only be certain versions of Vista or a feature of UAC but in such a case just setup an account on both the machine and the computer and use that instead of Guest, or use the Public folder sharing feature.
No, I will not send you Manuals, Software or your own little repair Genie to fix all your problems for you.
