First you have to have a compatible hard drive (not just any hard drive will work)

You need the Canon Support Tool and you need the Firmware for that model.

If you have not already you need to register the firmware with the Support Tool. Start the Support Tool, attach the cables to the copier, start the copier while pressing 2+8 till in Upload mode. Select the copier you want to upload the firmware to and go from there.

It is not a simple process on this old Canon.

Have you tried to recover the old HHD?

Fit the old HDD back in the machine, then power on the machine while holding down buttons 1&9 this will run a scan disk type of repair, you should see some white boxes on the screen, it can take about 60 mins to complete. When the screen shows "download standby" the process has finished. Power off & on the machine & see if it will boot.

You need to format it using the Canon System Support Tool like teckat's instructions.
