The system software is stored on the Flash PCB. When you format the HDD the system restores the system firmware automatically.

Yes I'd be interested to know if this actually works.

Print Article Article Feedback Checking Data - Usually After Power Outage. Boot recovery method for Gen 3 devices
                        2023-09-12
Product : All imageRUNNER ADVANCE Generation 3 and DX Devices
Title : Checking Data - Usually After Power Outage

                        Problem :

Machine will not boot up to ready. May have Checking Data or Initializing Please Wait message, Blank Display, or Progress Bar not moving on Gen 3 and DX devices.

                        Solution :

This document is procedures for determining if the boot failure is caused by a faulty Hard Drive or just corrupted system software.

This document is not a replacement for the Service Manual. It is recommended to reference the latest revision of the Service Manual for the product that is being worked on.

Do not load firmware at this time. It is best to update after machine has booted to ready.

When faced with any of these symptoms and are sure that the device is stuck in this state, power down the device completely & follow these next steps.

                        1) Box Check Test - On the imageRUNNER Advance models, hold the 2 and 4 buttons while powering on device. Release when you see Box Check Version...

On the DX models, hold button 3 until you see the message. A chart of the DX Control Panel button functions is below.

The Box Check test will run diagnostics on all standard and optional controller related hardware. When it is complete, it will display either a large OK or NG.

The image below shows the Box Check results screen.

Examine the stats in the Read Performance Check. A healthy HDD read/write speed is considered 80 MBs or above. If performance falls below 50 MBs, there may be an issue with the hard drive. It may need to be reformatted to improve performance. If the issue persists, replacement may be necessary.

Next, look at the Sector Counts. If any other character but 0 is displayed in the three brackets, this would indicate corrupt sectors and hard drive replacement may be needed.

If both these sections look healthy, proceed to Step 2. If not, consider replacing hard drive and proceed to Step 2.

                        2) Formatting Thumb Drive - If you already have firmware loaded on a thumb drive, you can use it to format the hard drive. If you have a thumb drive but no internet access, you can still format the hard drive by following the next steps.

Insert thumb drive and open File Explorer. Right click on thumb drive letter and select FORMAT as shown below.

Make sure to format in FAT32 as shown below.

When completed, create a new folder by right clicking anywhere on the right side in the white area and selecting NEW and FOLDER as shown below.

The folder will need to be renamed based on the naming convention listed in the chart below. To rename the folder, right click on the folder and select RENAME as shown below.

                        3) Format Hard Drive - With your thumb drive inserted, boot machine into Safe Mode by either holding down the 2 & 8 buttons or 1 & 3 buttons (DX only - see chart above) until SELECT VERSION is displayed. Select 4)CLEAR/FORMAT. Select 0 to confirm. DISK RESERVATION HAS BEEN SET will be displayed (formatting does not occur until reboot). PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE will be displayed. Press any key then press C (CLEAR) key to return to the Main Menu. Press RESET key to start shutdown. Press 0 key to confirm. At this time the Main Switch will turn off. Remove your thumb drive and turn on Main Switch. INITIALIZING-5 MIN REMAINING will be displayed. At this time formatting of the hard drive is occurring. After approximately 2 minutes, the machine will reboot into an error state and display CONFIGURATION NEEDS TO BE UPDATED. TURN MACHINE OFF THEN ON. Reboot the device. At this time, the Flash PCB loads the firmware back into the Hard Drive. Within 2 minutes, the machine should boot to a ready state.

The image below shows the Folder Naming Chart
