    Canon NP2020 Feed Issue

My wife's church was just given this copier that we are hoping will work well for us. The copier that the church already is using is small, slow and jams very often.

This machine seems to work well with the exception of the paper pickup. Every now and then (roughly about every 10-15 copies) the pickup will pull two sheets of paper and this will cause the copier to stop with the jam indicator lights on. When accessing the paper there is never anything actually jammed hard. There is almost always a single sheet on the fuser bed and two overlapping sheets inside the right door.

This appears to happen more frequently with the top drawer than the bottom and more frequently if we are printing on the second side of a sheet.

My guess is that this means the pick up tires are worn (I already cleaned them) but I wanted to get some opinions before I spent $10 per roller.

Replace the pick up, feed, and separation rollers. Simple solution equals peace of mind.

    Goodluck,

      Forgive my newbie questions.

I know what the pick up rollers are. I am guessing the feed rollers are the rollers inside the right hand door that are about 3/4" in diameter. Where are the separation rollers found?

Also, Where would I find parts? I already replaced the drum and cleaning knife. Those were easy to find online. I think finding the rollers might be a bit more difficult.

separation roller is adjacent (nearly below) the feeding roller... if you dont find any roller below the feed roller, it is using a separation pad instead......
        Just came out from hybernation.....

          Pick up rollers

This model is old, most models these days use pick up.feed, and sep rollers
I believe the rollers you are looking for are FA6-5547-000 you need 6 if I'm correct. Hope this helps.

If the copier is picking up the paper and double feeds 10 to 15 copies you need to tighten up the cassette side guides and make the angle of the front silver pie shaped tabs are equal also fan the paper aggresively. if the double feed contiues change to a different paper. it does not sound like you need new pick up rollers. being a church are you running those pre printed forms with a fancey picture and you fold it in half if so that is most of the problem.....

NP 2020 was known for the feed clutches to go bad, they are a wrap spring design and I remember replacing quite a few feed clutches in those.

We don't use preprinted bulletin covers. We have been printing on one side of the paper and then putting those sheets back in the tray to run a second side.

The exact same tray moved to the lower slot seems to reduce the problem does that point to the clutch problem?

Also, when I pull out the copies that are stuck together, the sheets seem to have a lot of static electricity to them. I am guessing that may be why it is feeding two. The copier has a static strip that I have cleaned once already. Could that be the issue?

There are only about a million things that can cause jamming on the NP-2020 series copiers. They are truly "Jammomatics".

If I were to rank the first 10 or so possibilities I would start here:

                  1) Pickup clutches: Clean with alcohol and lubricate the plastic clutch spring with 5 or 6 drops of Marvel Mystery Oil (the red stuff).
                  2) Stretched out or dirty slipping transport belts, or broken transport belt pulleys. With the front door keyed you'll be able to watch the rotation of the belts. Replace the appropriate part.
                  3) Broken right cassette rail (the left is also possible, but less likely).
                  4) Broken paper tray.
                  5) Dirty right vertical path rollers. Clean with orange oil based cleaner.
                  6) Intermittent exit sensor (reed switch). The magnet may be poorly aligned or the switch may not change state when it gets heated up.
                  7) Seizing upper vertical path clutch. Rotate the green handle at the right side to see how easy it turns.
                  8) Overfilled waste toner area of the drum unit causes the drum drive coupler to strip. The drum turns intermittently.

The "D" shaped rollers do not cause much of a problem, regardless of how old they are.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                  1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                  2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                  3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                  4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                  5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

this ia old copier and if the second tray works better than the first tray use it. Do you know that you could buy a new duplexing copier for under $500.00 does your copier jam on the first side?

I agree that swapping out the trays has fixed a few of those problems for me. Also there is a solenoid that controls the rotation of the plastic clutch. If it is malfunctioning it can cause the clutch to rotate twice causing a multi-feed.
