    [Electrical] ULTREX CONNECTORS_Teck Tip

    ULTREX CONNECTORS
In the process of trouble-shooting an electrical problem, ultrex connectors need to be checked. These connectors fit over the pin base on a PCB. If you experience a problem with one of these connectors, then take a file or micro-cutters and trim a small amount all the way around the bottom of the connector. This will allow the connector to fit further down on the pin base and give better connections.

The plating on the ultrex connectors used in Canons will flake off, causing cross connections. This will result in any number of strange electrical problems which mimic PCB failures. If you have access to an ultrex connector tool, which looks like a small screwdriver with a very thin two pronged end, insert it around each individual connection. This will clear out the cross connection caused by the flakes and tighten the connector as well. Spraying the connector with contact cleaner an blowing it out works sometimes too.

When this is done carefully, there's no problem. But over the years I've seen a lot of mangled connectors as a result of drastic trimming of connector edges, and excessively tweaked prongs.

I've had very good results with Electro-Kleen contact cleaner and a small brass wire brush, applied to the harness end of the connector. These other methods can result in worse problems than you started with. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

What machines are we talking about? I think the NP6650 had ultrex connectors, anything newer?

Yeah, NP-6650, NP-8530, the last of the big analogs. Eventually Canon got smart and stopped using Ultrex. The Mita
        DC-1205 and DC-1255 did also.

The thing about the Ultrex connector related problems, was that the symptoms were extremely unpredictable. For example:

        NP-6650:
Black copies? Jamming? Ultrex J110 on DC controller
Light streaks? Clean Ultrex at blank lamp assy and op panel PWBs
Voids in the feed direction? Clean Ultrex at blank lamp assy and op panel PWBs
Misfeeds on bed? Light copies? Ultrex J101 on DC controller
Copying by itself, one copy at a time? Clean Ultrex at op panel
Comes to Ready without initial rotations? Ultrex J105 on DC controller
Noise from HVT constantly? Ultrex J102 & J103 on DC controller

        NP-8530:
Very light copies? Ultrex on potential control PWB
Misfeeds on bed? All cassettes read as legal size regardless of actual paper size? Ultrex on duplex driver PWB
Ledger paper not recognized in any cassette? Goes to a jam state immediately when Start is pressed? Ultrex on duplex driver PWB
E020? Ultrex on DC driver PWB
E210? Ultrex on DC controller and DC driver PWB
Check paper indication as if a LCT was installed (when not installed)? Ultrex on connector PWB
Comes to Ready without initial rotations? Scan lamp comes on and stays on continuously? Ultrex J114 on DC controller & J402 at connector PWB
Paper deck feeds during warmup, even when out of paper? Ultrex J114 on DC controller
Backlight is visible, but no characters displayed? E243 & copier functions normally? Ultrex J116 on DC controller
Main motor switches to low speed during duplexing? Ultrex J102 on DC controller
Misfeeds at fixing exit sensor Q10 that won't clear? Ultrex on connector PWB
Misfeeds from paper feed unit that won't clear? Ultrex J5 on paper feed unit controller

Just crazy stuff with no rational explanation. =^..^=

techs still post for help , and I receive e-mails for your posted problems,

          thanks for the reminders

once had a np 6650 start to run lgl in the middle of the night and kept jamming sheets in the reg area. It kept feeding, even though no paper made it until the exit. The next day after clearing the jammed paper, I was talking to the customer, when the machine started running and jamming lgl again, continously feeding and stuffing sheets in the reg. Damn connectors!
