Hi folks.I have a irc 5151 that is dragging/smearing the image on the operator side of the machine aprox.1/4 inch in.I removed the right hand panel and ran a pg5 to see the image on the transfer belt and it is fine.I then jammed the machine and removed the transfer belt and found that the image on the under side of the belt was starting to scrape off approx half way along. The scrape/smear mark is about 5 millimetres in diameter. The transfer belt had tracked across to the back also so I stripped and cleaned transfer unit.I tried pg5 again, first one was fine. After that it started again.Any ideas?

Yes many times common problem, on clc/irc3200's as well. If you remove ITB assembly and take off flat metal plates you will see where belt has been dragging against them.
Worse on 51 family if drum units allowed to run to far over life, bk toner leaks out onto belt helping it to track off, make sure you clean itb assembly before putting new belt on.Comment

if this is the series of machine i am thinking of, there is a mod/on newer machine, a bottom plate that is not fixed, but can move a little. it gives you a little more space away from the belt. if you still have issues, i will try to find the part number if it is not posted laterYes, I am here to fix your machine. No, your machine went out of warranty 18 years ago.Comment

Your correct, but even on modified ITB assemblies if the belt tension/guide bands stretch the belt tracks off you have to replace the belt. The modification just helps to delay the time it takes before smearing. Add a bit of loose toner and you have blurred image as well. On 3200's techs used to bend the metal plates away from the belt to achieve same result.Comment

The root cause of smearing ITB is dirt in the internal secondary transfer rollers bushings. This is the thin rubber roller on the ITB's lower side. It has two plastic bushings and dirt (from a leaking drum) makes it run heavy. The itb drive roller (big rubber roller on the side) pushes the belt towards the sec. transfer causing the belt to fold/bend to to cover.
So replace the ITB, clean the ITB Assy, esspecially the drive roller with rubber cleaner and don;t forget the sec. Transfer rollers bushings.
Then finaly bend the ITB cover so that is rests a few mm lower.
Imho i think this is the best solution, the cover mod sucks.Comment
