When I get this error with a grinding noise I replace the Transport assembly. New part number is #A12R70533.

If i remember correctly its the transfer roller retraction not working ok.
Its got a clutch a solenoid and sensor in the mix.

What if there's no grinding? Are we talking the image transfer belt unit? Is there something mechanical not happening that can be repaired or adjusted without having to be replaced?

Yes that's what the trouble shooting says, but have you personally solved this problem?

Yes many times. Reassemble it, you could find a broken gear stud in there...

Check the timing on the gears for the shutter. It the roller is all the way up the shutter should be completely closed.
There is a hole in the gear to position it. Never checked the manual to align it.
This would not trigger the code but the machine would not be able to calibrate properly or transfer toner.

The retraction solenoid has a tiny foam sound damping pad, this over time gets sticky & causes the solenoid to not return, simply remove this sticky foam pad.

Possibility of broken stud on the lowest level gear like Allan is saying or just pul it apart and re-assemble. When re-assembling there is arrow on two gears and each of the gears has its own position against the frame where you will find a little cut in. Once bothe aligned then put the small gear in between them two. Then keep it in place and put the cover with wires inside (crap design) and 2 screws in.

If I can suggest, check the plastic bushings on the silver reg.roller both sides. They tend to go eliptical. Slowing reg feed down and ocasionally skew.
