      Open the tray 2 check the back tray and check the sensor

          The service manual doesn't note what I should offer as a sacrifice to keep the printer running. How many human tears would suffice you think?

              The copier gods require a blood sacrifice, preferably yours. Most of the machines that I have bled on work better ... I don't know about tears. I don't do much crying over copiers. =^..^=
              If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
              1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
              2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
              3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
              4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
              5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

                  Loose connection or stuck holder. It may come back. Lube the slider with sensors. Check for proper connections.

                      You wouldn't have an image or illustration of how the sensor might look? I'm not sure what to look for. In the FSM (40Mb PDF) on page ≈620 there are images showing the tray, but I don't see anything related to sensors there.

                          Buddy there is paper inside behind paper trays. Happened when there is jammed paper in tray and without removing properly.

                                  Happened with me last week on C550. Found a paper droped behind tray blocking tray connector to sit in body. I' sure u have same situation.
