Even tho you said it doesn't happen on mono prints, I would go into the service test print and select solid prints on each color, and see if the background appears on the magenta\yellow\cyan prints just for s--ts & giggles

how do set adjustments in background?
        thanks
New original drums for example from shipping damaged machine won't appear to troubled machine as new because chips won't reset voltages etc.
You should put brand new drums.
I would start putting brand new DR316K.
Watch out for stabilization it must do automatically then do gradation.

try pulling the print engine and clean the glass and mirrors. I had something similar a couple weeks ago.

I've never seen the print head cause dark background / quality issues. Only seen light image when print head / windows are dirty

Back to my original post, even though not happening with black test prints and only color I would still say you have a K drum issue. Did you do halftone test pages in service mode? What about led erase lamps above drum? Or K developer unit?

FYI, K drum / toner is also used when printing colors. K toner mixes with color toners to give truer colors.

This should be easy to troubleshoot using the tools built into machine......
