C220 (Like C280 C360) issues with bypass and both tray 1 and 2. Jam but no paper

    Hi,

I have been using this printer for years, I bought it used, tray 1 always jammed (with paper really being jammed from my memories) and the bypass sometimes caused issues until it gave C-011 each time after one or two prints. Today the second tray died on me and it says that there is a jam even though the paper is not being fed at all. I disassembled it and noticed the gears roll when I rub the rubber gears that pick the paper but not the other way around, and as well that there are solenoids in said gears, could they be dead and that'd be the issue? I also put back a spring on the transparent plastic part that guides paper next to tray 1, but it still causes a jam without paper being jammed. Lastly I cleaned the black sensor in the middle of the paper path with compressed air, to no avail either.

Any help on what to do to diagnose and solve the issue is very welcome as it is my only printer, I use it to print little booklets to distribute and buying an other one (and getting rid of this one) is not possible. I'm tech savvy but all the videos I watched didn't teach me much about printers, it seems an obscure world when you don't work for the brand. I have browsed some threads here but still I don't know what I should do. I must also add that I never did maintenance on this printer, but I printed maximum 5000 pages, it has done around 100k total and was maintained by Konica before.

The rollers are suppose to turn only one way.

The plastic guide you put spring back on probably has a broken tab(s) that fits into holes at bottom. This will cause jams.

Probably needs new paper feed rollers. Did you try cleaning the rubber PF rollers with alcohol?

If it jams but no paper being feed, its usually the bottom of the 3 rollers (separation roller).

Also just check that the paper is loaded properly as you will also get this issue if there is a piece of paper folded up, lower down in the stack of paper.

        Hi,

        THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

I just cleaned the red and black rollers as well as the black sensor in the middle with a non fibrous cloth and alcohol. Tray 2 works fine now, at least so far. I don't understand, they looked fine and I was expecting some major technical issue not just some dirt on the rubber rollers.

I don't understand, they were sticky but not too sticky, there was not a lot of dust and I expected that they'd work till they would be like I saw some descriptions here of crumbling into pieces so I wasn't even paying attention to them.

I have done the same job of cleaning for tray 1, the tabs on the transparent plastic don't seem broken and they are in the holes but the plastic is a bit white like it was bent. Still jamming without a page being jammed for real, but I'm already very grateful that you enabled me to have a working printer again! In case you or anyone has ideas on how to solve the bypass issue, I'd be very grateful but already having one tray working is amazing! Would it make sense to clean its rollers as well?

For reference the rollers and the tabs on tray 1:

Id replace the 2 rollers that are touching each other they look pretty worn (they should look like the roller on its own)

This is the easiest point to start with any fault finding with jamming.

Thanks for the tip, I will try to source the parts, just in case. I'm already so relieved that it works again with tray 2! Thank you and copyman.

Glad it worked. I agree with other poster about replacing the rollers. I would do both trays. As for bypass wont hurt to clean those rollers but were some other issues that would cause jamming. Also if you dont have the service manual I would get it so you know how disassemble the units. One tip comes to mind about tray 1 & 2, when you replace rollers make sure the spring for pick up roller is in hole that will put more pressure on roller. Been awhile but think it's the bigger hole of the two on drop down plate.

When you get around to replacing those roller, also remove the black "oneway" bearings that the rollers interface with and look at the metal shaft under each of them. If it is really shinny, with a mirror like finish, take something that is mildly abrasive (generally a green scotch-bright pad works best) and scuff up the shiny area under those bearings until it has a dull finish to it. The shafts get worn smooth and cause the oneway bearings to slip, which will also result in the issue you are seeing where it indicates a jam and nothing has even come out of the tray.

Thanks for those tips, I'm waiting for the rollers to arrive to open it again. I have downloaded the manual, 1000 pages is daunting but I'll have a look at it. It was a bit hard to dissassemble but once I figured the plastic in the hinge could be removed to open the door completely, it was easy to access the paper chargers. Thanks again everyone!

That's why I suggested getting the serv manual because there are step by step intructions on how to disassemble the paper feed units & manual feed tray.
