    SMB scanning on FS-3140MFP

    Hello all,

I am having a heck of a time setting up an FS-3140 to scan SMB. They had an earlier version of this machine that was scanning smb fine. I connected my laptop to their network and set up smb scan to it and it worked just fine. This is a small network with only 3 laptops (small business). I know I'm missing something but not sure what. I have set up many smb scanning before. I think it is a setting within the laptops. I set up the copier address book with the Hostname (computer name), User account and password of computer, shared the scans folder on the C: drive with everyone (read/write). I even tried IP address of computer as the host as well. Since I'm thinking the laptop settings are more than likely my problem, could someone elaborate on what settings are required on the computer for smb scanning. One computer is Windows 7 and the others are 8.1. I believe "password protected sharing" should be off and "File and printer sharing" should be on. Are there any other settings I should check? I did turn off firewall which made no difference. I'm missing something.

EDIT: I did notice that the laptops are on a WORKGROUP versus a HOMEGROUP. Did not know if this matters.

I believe you need "password protected sharing" on. Set up a local account on each machine. Example user name: scan pass: 4scan4. Share the target folder with the "scan" account, with read/write privileges.

"Password protected sharing" has nothing to do with it.

      - First make sure it has the latest firmware on, since there were some SMB fixes addressed in the past.
      - When sharing a folder, do not use simple sharing. Go to Properties - Sharing - Advanced sharing - Share it and than go to permissions and tick full control for everyone or add a specific local account and put full control on it.
      - Username can fool you sometimes. Don't refer to it thru Control Panel. Open CMD prompt and type: whoami and it will tell you exact computername\username.
      - Check if they have installed some specific antivirus suite (like Kaspersky or F-secure) which will by deafult block smb traffic on port 139 that you need. In that case you need to make exceptions in them to allow it.

Kyo fan pretty much nailed it on the head I think.. I typed up basically the same thing, but I always refresh the webpage before submitting a reply ,so I don't repost same stuff someone else just posted.. Glad I did.. LOL..
All 4 things he mentioned are generally items most forget about..
Especially the CMD prompt & advanced permissions.. Customers will swear up and down that they are giving you the correct username & passwords.. Once you have the info, log the user out of their pc and try to get back in there using the same credentials you are using in the copier.. That way you can verify their password too..

Thanks everyone for your input on this. I have been racking my brain on this one. I am going back today to try again. I will implement your information. I do however need to clarify Kyo's comment on allowing the port 139. Does this need to be done for the Anti-virus as well as the Windows Firewall? I just looked at my Windows 7 machine at home and do not see a way to open ports in Windows Firewall or my Anti-virus. Could you elaborate on how to do this?

Edit: I was able to find how to open ports in Windows Firewall . I take it does not matter if they are on a WorkGroup versus a HomeGroup?

FS-3140 is around 6 years old is it not...???
I'm not sure you can get SMB2.0 - 3.0 to work with this machine using WIN7-or WinX upward ....

Luv your enthusiasm..... I would like to see you get it working.

I would genuinely like to know if it works....

I think it should work. The Kyocera it replaced was an earlier version and it scanned just fine. This office runs into PC issues from time to time. They surf the Internet as Administrators and pick up Malware. I usually just clean them up from time to time. Not to bad. I will post my results when I get it going. Talking about old-farts, I'm right there with you. Started in this industry in 1982. Got out a few times but was sucked back in. Maybe I'm addicted to toner and needed a fix. Anyway I will give an update soon.

Thanks Kyo fan for your help. Although I was unable to update the to the latest firmware I was able to get it scanning. I used your method for folder sharing, the command prompt whoami to obtain computername\username, and allowed port 139 in Windows firewall and it is now scanning. I am not sure whats up with the issue of updating the firmware. I will open a seperate post for that if needed. Also have an issue with fuser jams on 2 sided only. Will open new post on that if needed. When it rains it pours. Anyway, thanks again. I will remember this one.

There are threads on moving the left tray guide over one tooth. That will resolve your duplex jams.
                      Hope that helps !

Thanks tmaged. I went back and tried to fix the jamming issue. Spent a long time there. Totally disassembled and used parts off another machine to no avail. Was totally frustrated. did not even go back to the office, I just went home. Googled the issue and found many posts in many forums for the solution. Your right, one measly tooth can resolve this issue. That explains the cocking sideways when the paper goes back into the machine to do the other side. Glad you posted this.

That was it. Adjusted the cassette and ran a long run of duplex with no jams. What a relief. Thanks again for your help.

First time i ran into that duplex jam problem i was stumped, as i tried everything that would be related. Saw somewhere on the web a fix that i followed and it has been working without any callbacks. Move the tray guides fully inwards, hold the top of both and bend inwards a bit. I think with time, the customer opening the tray to insert paper, the top of the tray spreads apart a bit to cause the paper to wander. Also read of moving the guides one tooth over.

May want to verify that the firmware you're using is actually for the FS-3140MFP...
Might possibly be firmware for the FS-3140MFP+ instead..
The "plus" uses different firmware than the regular MFP..

Also, I know that the USB port can be disabled within the settings menu.. (System Menu/Counter - System - I/F Block Set. - USB Host - Unblock/Block)
However, I would think this is probably not your problem.. I don't believe disabling the USB port from customer use will actually block it from firmware upgrades, but I have never actually tried disabling one and performing firmware upgrades so as to test the theory.. So I can't be sure of that one.. Maybe one of these other guys knows for certain..

I know you're up & running now.. So no worries.. Mainly its just some food for thought.. lol
