Yeah, it's a car lot. But the copier is in the repair center. So, yeah, it's kinda dirty.

The one I repaired was in a factory. Their manufacturing process left 1/2" of fluffy brown ... like welding dust, every visit. I found it amazing that the machine worked at all. I was not disappointed when they bought from somebody else. =^..^=

I once moved to Texas for a few months and went to work for Star Graphics in Beaumont, Tx. There's nothing but oil refineries there. They sent me to work on a copier in a "coker" plant., I didn't even know what that was. I quickly found out. Coker is the waste left over from the oil refining process. It's black powder. Looks like toner. That shit was everywhere. All over the copier. Nasty. Dirtiest environment I've ever seen in my life.

The worst I've seen was an iron foundry.

A byproduct of the iron smelting process is carbon black. This fine black dust invades every part of the building, and is clingy. The first time I went there, I spent a couple hours scrubbing up the off-white covers of the Canon fax. By the time I returned from getting the signature the machine was already the charcoal gray color of the bizhubs.

On one occasion of being there one of their smelting machines broke in a catastrophic way ... the whole building shuddered, shaking loose about a ton of black dust collected in the rafters, and on the ledges of the I-beams. I had been loading up my tools out in the parking lot, when the employees started streaming out. Head-to-toe black as soot, only the whites of their eyes showing.

+1 on the stalled laser slit glass cleaner. IIRC the cleaner is part of the laser unit itself, and not purchasable separately. You will need to entirely remove the laser unit to repair or replace this.

The thing to watch for when your manually driving the cleaner through its travel, is that when it reaches the end of it's travel there is some spring pressure holding the cleaner against the threads. If the spring pressure is inadequate the cleaner will cross-thread and jam or never catch and stall at the end. I have stretched those springs a bit, to make sure they're pressing back at the end of the travel. Also clean as much dirt out of the worm and use white grease to lubricate it.

I know it's counter-intuitive to grease it when the grease can collect dirt, but it does need the grease. =^..^=

I had a little time to play around with the laser unit here at the shop. I see what you're talking about with the spring and it how it works with the worm gear. This is great information because the LAST thing I want to do is have to take the laser unit out AGAIN. And I'll just take your word about the grease because you've never led me down the wrong path before.

Follow up: The cleaning arm was stuck. I changed out the LSU to correct. I'll play around with the defective one now that I have it at the shop. Anyway, thanks for the help guys. You're still batting 1000.
