Kyocera 3551ci display starts distorting then turns white or turns off. Almost looks like it's oscillating. When it does this customer can't use the display. Customer has to power cycle the machine and the display will work fine for a while. Probably power cycling the machine 7 - 10 times per day. We've removed the display and cleaned and reconnected it, updated the FW to the latest version, replaced entire display unit with a good known working used one and updated the FW again, cleaned the main board (dust from rear fan), cleaned and reconnected connectors YC6, YC12 and YC30 on the main board. Even cleaned and reconnected all the other connectors on the main board (except the ribbon cables). Still having the same problem; it's like we never touched the machine. WEIRD! I heard rumors about a bad or improperly installed fax memory dimm but who knows. We even checked the power outlet and it's wired correctly and power is a stable 120 - 123 volts. Anyone have any ideas? Stumped here...

As a first step, I would try replacing the red cable that runs from the LCD to the main PWB.Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment

Thanks we sold it used with a low meter so I don't know where it came from but where it's at now is clean, dry and no water (Michigan). I do have a 3050ci, do you know if that's the same Ram?Comment

Thanks, have you had a lot of those red cables go bad? Wonder how hard it is to fish one of those through?Comment

I wouldn't say it's common but I have had them go bad. It's not hard to replace. Just remove the upper right cover and the upper back cover. You'll see the route of the red cable. Of course you have to take off the op-panel to remove that end of the red cable. It's worth a shot. If that doesn't fix the problem, I'd say you may have a bad main PWB. You've already replaced the op-panel with a known good one. There's not much else left that it could be.Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment

Re: Kyocera 3551ci Display distorting then turns white or turns off...
Okay here is what I did to get them by and so far it seems to be working. I set the low power saver to 1 minute vs 60 minutes. This is so the screen goes to sleep 1 minute after each use forcing the machine to refresh the display with each use. So far each time they wake it up it's been fine. Better than replacing the main board, but let's see how it goes...Comment

Black or blank screen also happens if mounted memory dimm on main pwb is broken.
Do you get internal error log on eventlog when it happens?
I remember cases with black screen when fax function would selected....
check/exchange 1GB memory dimm for ASIC/ located in the middle from Main PWB

Checked the memory and it's not broken. Cleaned and reseated again, no go. Finally printed an event log and all errors since Oct are fax errors. I reseated the fax card and memory dimm. Seeing how it goes. If it returns I'm going to remove the fax card and dimm and if problem doesn't come back I'll replace the fax kit. I should have printed an event log in the first place!Comment
