    TaskAlfa 8002i and 8003i Cardstock use and Jamming

    Hi there. I'm not a service tech but I oversee a few TaskAlfas (8002i and 8003i) and they are constantly jamming on the #110 - index paper 199gsm (and heavier) even on the bypass tray. I now know these things can do heavier stock but I do have some questions

    • What are the custom settings I can put it on to prevent this
    • What is the duty cycle for heavier papers on this sort of device? Does it wear it down faster? We will at times need to print several thousand sheets a month on really heavy paper and wonder if this is appropriate for the device.

      Setting the correct media type for the 'Heavy Paper' tray(s) is essential.

      However it is not clear from the Media Types listed (Plain/Cardstock/Thick..etc) what the actual paper weight they should apply to.

      That is in a different place, and shows the GSM settings for each media type, or custom types you create.

      System Menu->Common Settings->Original/Paper Settings

      Spec limit is Cassette 256gsm/MP 300gsm and setting these weights will limit functions like duplex and folding/stapling in some cases where it would jam if it tried.

          Jamming Where?
          paper feed?
          fuser? etc........
          How many copies on machine?
          How much of the index stock do you run a day?

          A steady diet of index will wear parts faster ie paper feed tires and other parts

          Duty cycles are based on 20lb plain paper

              You can get the Users Manual here. It's a good place to start. You'll want to create a Custom Media Type for Heavy3 media. When you use glossy media you'll need a Custom Media Type for Heavy4 media (one increment heavier to properly fuse glossy media).

                  The MFP's that you have are fully capable of handling 199gsm media from any tray, with the correct media type settings. When using heavier media you may experience earlier wear on feed rollers and/or additional cleaning visits, but that's something you'd experience on any machine. A couple thousand pages is not high volume for these machines. It can handle this easily.

                  One qualification: Do not assume all the paper on your shelf is 199gsm. It probably isn't. And when the incorrect media type is selected, you can get wrinkling, jamming, poor fusing (low temperature), or bleeding (high temperature). You will discover that the MFP runs slower to accommodate the heavier media. This is exactly what it's supposed to do.

                  You can simply determine the gsm of any piece of paper:
                  Weight the piece of paper on a gram scale. Your 199gsm media weights 12.00grams
                  Divide that 12.00 by the fraction of a square meter that your paper represents, in the case of ANSI A (letter) 0.060264 meters squared.

                  12/0.060264 = 199.12gsm

                      I've not had good luck with 7002+ machines' multipurpose tray being able to pull in (barely)heavier stocks due to stalling of the drive motor when the leading edge arrives at below the registration assembly, which results in Jam 4009.

                      You NEED to supply us with your JAM code(s) and circumstances before we can offer any further useful advice...

                          No answer here but pretty impressed with that side knowledge Blackcat has with the weight of the paper .
