    Kyocera Taskalpha 2550ci code 0640

I normally work on Canon's and have replaced many hard drives and loaded/upgraded system software, but have never done it on a Kyocera.

The copier has a code 0640 that happened at least twice so I'm planning on ordering a hard drive from Hytec for it. I read in other threads for different Kyocera models that I need to format/partition the HDD in service mode once installed and maybe install firmware....not sure though.

My question: Do I need to install firmware after the HDD is installed and partitioned?
If so, where is the firmware available? Download from Kyocera or is it for "Authorized" service providers only?

    Thanks

You do not need to install firmware for regular operation. While recommended of course, you need access to get it from Kyocera.

The firmware will add any available color tables (for special color matching), OCR dictionaries(for text searchable PDF if applicable), language packs, and default legacy app's like FMU but those are the only firmware elements involved with the HDD.

Unlike most MFPs, Kyoceras only hold addressbook information, network setup credentials, job account data, page data and user boxes on the HDD. If the HDD malfunctions, unplugging the HDD will restore basic functionality. When you install the new HDD it will need to be formatted on the machine. You'll need to restore network credentials, addressbook entries, job account data, and user boxes. Most customers do not use all these features, so setup could be very easy. =^..^=

Follow up: Couldn't have been easier! I replaced the HDD and when I turned on the power, it started printing jobs from the customers print driver queue that they never deleted. I didn't even need to set up ip address.gw, sm, dns or anything else. Super easy! Thanks!

Only hard when they have apps installed... Anyway to backup apps easily? Can be a real pain sometimes might have a customer with papercut and if you don't have that particular version to reinstall on the HDD after being replaced.
