[Electrical] kyocera 5053ci loud noise, buzzing or is it gear grinding.

Towards the middle of December 2021,
replaced the rollers for the trays
pulled transfer belt out to remove a piece of paper that was stuck on the transfer belt
cleaned the belt (eventually replaced the transfer belt)

video at the time for the noise
    5053ci noise - YouTube

client sent me this video of how it's currently running
    Amazon Photos

it's still printing fine? client says that it still prints.

    looked at two post

    and

I will be referring to the posts and the answers with diagnostic in service menu.

I was wondering if I should bring a fuser along with me so I do not have to make another trip.

    thank you in advance

Sounds like your waste toner bottle cap is not opening up to allow used toner in causing a back-up and eventually seizing that drive gear making that exact noise. We had a couple machines with that issue.

Waste toner unit is backed up. Need to clean or replace the waste toner unit, check the belt waste toner spout as it usually backs into there first, and the waste toner bottle unit.
I've had several waste toner bottle units pop the top cover up at the drive gear and the bottle won't turn to clear waste toner into the bottle. I have been able to pop that back into position on a couple without removing the bottle unit. It takes a bit of finesse and persistence.

The waste toner unit is mounted to the back of the main drive unit. You may be able to see the top cover at the drive gear of the waste bottle by pulling tray 1 out and looking at the back corner where the waste bottle unit contacts the back wall of the machine. (if this makes any sense)

I would take the primary belt, waste unit in the back of the main drive unit, the waste bottle unit and the feed drive unit.
All of those items interface with waste toner. I've had one to all of them fail. I've also replaced part of them and had to go back and do them
all on the next visit a month or two later. It's all under warranty, so I'd plan to do it all.
        Hope that helps !

That sounds nothing like a problem with the transfer belt... TO ME... It sounds like you need to replace all the drawer feed rollers... I had this issue a few months back, and it def sounds like its inside the machine, but trust me... replace the feed rollers for whatever drawer you was using in the video and your noise will be gone. Please let us know if I'm wrong & what you find to remedy, or if this will take care of the noise. Can't wait to see what it is

AFTER going back to your post and the client's amazon video, that scared the living hell outta me when it started grinding , sounds like maybe registration or t/s roller drive... I am interested in the fix for this one

It's the waste toner system. I've heard it enough to know that sound like my own kids voice. Unfortunately.

currently on site working with the copier. leaving soon...

I was attempting to clean out the waste toner unit (the box assembly) but realized by step 20, it was going to consume too much time.
And rather get the part and replace it.

Any who, i should have started with U030 and check out the motor operation. I wasted a good amount of time. Haha a newbie mistake.

When I hit "feed" that thang was LOUD and once i get home I will upload the video. it looks like the motor is stuck but still trying to turn??

Kind of off topic, but does using generic/3rd party toner cause these sorts of issue?

I explained it to our senior tech and he said the same thing.

Currently looking at the service manual, (4-160) - (4-173)
All it looks like I need is the "parts wtb unit sp" 302ND94225
I want to verify if that is all we would need to fix this issue.

Also, I edited the original post with an added video while I took the back panel off and ran U030 to test the motor.
I hope it helps clarifies the issue we are experiencing.

                thank you Darry!

Re: kyocera 5053ci loud noise, buzzing or is it gear grinding.

you can clean out the plugged waste manifold which will get rid of the noise.
remove the big drive gear pack, manifold is attached with hooks to front(far side) of the gear pack.

the waste container drive gear is potentially not meshing with the container due to deformation of the housing and should be checked by twisting the container while installed. the container should not turn freely. This has been a common root-cause of waste pluggage and gear noise exactly as the customer video. the noisy gear is actually driving the auger at the bottom of the manifold, but the manifold is plugged because it has nowhere to dump due to the container not turning or plugged chute between mani and container.

third-party toner(pictured in the video) might definitely be causing pluggage on it's own as the texture and moisture absorption might be very different from stock. In this case you still need to go trough all the passages of the manifold and waste container with the vacuum and/or awl pick.

Best of luck: it's a messy job, but if you can avoid taking the container housing out, it's actually not too time-consuming. cleaning the manifold is usually enough unless the container drive gear problem has happened...

                    1. You'll need to clean out (or replace) the waste toner transport unit which is located on the back of the main drive unit. (302ND94015)
                    2. Check the belt cleaning section for impacted and hardened toner (clean out or replace belt)
                    3. Make sure the waste toner bottle is turning and taking in waste toner (clean/repair/or replace)

I've had several that I've been able to get everything going again just by meticulously cleaning each unit and making sure they operate effectively and I've had others where 1 or more of the above units had to be replaced.

This sounds like the noise I deal with every week. Definately sounds like feed rollers. More specifically, the retard roller

I am reading the service manual and have a bit of an issue on pinpointing what steps I need to follow.

Do I follow, 4-6 Disassembly and assembly procedures, (3-4) detaching and attaching the toner supply drive unit.

The waste toner transport unit is behind the main drive unit Disassembly Instructions 4-6(3-2) at the end of that section you'll find the "detach waste toner convey unit". That's the unit that is packed up and can often be cleaned out. It doesn't come apart, but with a good vacuum and some patience it can be vacuumed clean. I usually pull the bushings from each end of the auger in that unit to clean them as well.

All 3 steps I mentioned should be done.

                            1. You'll need to clean out (or replace) the waste toner transport unit which is located on the back of the main drive unit. (302ND94015)

                            2. Check the belt cleaning section for impacted and hardened toner (clean out or replace belt)

                            and then...

                            3. Make sure the waste toner bottle is turning and taking in waste toner (clean/repair/or replace)

If the waste toner bottle unit is broken it will need to be fixed or replaced because it's usually the cause of the backup into the conveyance unit. Once the conveyance unit backs up to the point that it's making the noise (because it's completely clogged and can't be driven anymore) the waste is usually also backed up into the belt cleaning unit and that will need to be cleared as well.

Lot's of work to make sure the call is completely completed.

Re: kyocera 5053ci loud noise, buzzing or is it gear grinding.

                              Regarding the waste bottle housing...

The usual defect I found in early 02-52 series was that the housing was not fully latched together between the upper and lower half of the main clamshell assembly. The two halves hinge together along one side with several tabs/slots. then the other side latches with hooks. But one of the hinge-side tabs might not be seated into the slot, always the one closest to the drive gear, resulting in deformation of the overall shape and incomplete meshing of the drive gear to the container.

Therefore the container spins slowly or not at all when it gets heavy, resulting in waste backing up all the way upstream to the waste "manifold"(my pet name for it) or conveying unit as it's called. The auger inside that unit will become stuck and it's drive gear will grind against the vertical conveying drive gear pack making the distinctive noise. The waste container housing is quite time-consuming to access therefore I do the twisting test of the container to see if the gear is meshing or slipping before taking anything apart. if the container gear is holding, I leave it alone and concentrate on the conveying unit.

The primary transfer belt and yellow drum are next-in-line to experience damage from waste backup because they are closest to the waste exit path and will experience pluggage or breaking of their internal augers. Make sure to inspect and vacuum all of the parts which generate waste. The transfer belt is easily cleaned/inspected in the field.
