Depends what manufacturer but for Kyocera it is just the address book. Same for most others, except Canon which stores the system software (machine OS)

Really just the address book? So where is Kyocera's OS stored then?

Probably on dedicated FW flash memory like Ricoh + KM. Kind of funny that they don't store the adress book data not there as well.
Usually the HDD is also used for spooling image / print job data or hold-job and box functions. Not a kyo expert though...

The idea that someone copies or scans their social security card and it remains stored on a hard drive is likely a myth.

It would be interesting to look at the actual files that reside on a copier hard drive. People think that PDFs of scans are just sitting there as though someone can easily view completed jobs. I've heard that it is tables of binary data, nothing recoverable. We know stored documents and the address book must be there but I think the hard drive would need to be installed in a copier to see anything.

I've used this software, it may allow looking at a hard drive without formatting or doing anything in disk management. I wonder if it would reveal the answers:

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
              1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
              2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
              3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
              4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
