TA 520i that seems to like scanning ledger

I have a TA 520i that is throwing me a curve. When you put a letter piece of paper in the letter direction the doc feed correctly recognizes it as a letter sheet of paper. When you press the start button to make a copy, the machine instantly changes to ledger and won't let it go. I thought this might be a doc feed problem so I disconnected the doc feed and tried making a copy off the platen. The platen constantly recognized a letter size paper as ledger.

Printing and receiving faxes work with ZERO problems. I mean they work perfectly. All paper size settings were set to auto. I toggled the Auto Rotation setting from off and on to see if it mattered and it didn't. I tried forcing the issue and making the machine use both letter and letter-r orientation out of both cassettes and it basically tried putting the image on the paper as if it was ledger. I put some ledger paper in the MP tray to see what happens and it did what it was supposed to do, put a letter image on a ledger piece of paper with zero zoom adjustments.

I've tried to reload the firmware (v7 and 1.13, I didn't have v8 with me). I attempted both a 989 (scandisk) and a 021 (init memory) since those have solved screwball problems before. I have not tried to format the HDD (024).

I'm pretty sure the Doc Feed (DF-760 single scan) isn't the problem. However something in the logic is causing the copier to instantly default to ledger whether you use the doc feed or the platen and that's where I'm stumped. Any ideas?

UPDATE: Just in case anyone else gets this problem.

After talking with Kyocera I attempted a 099 and the OSS was giving no reading at all. I'm going to replace the OSS and see what happens.

what kinda of light is right above the length sensor of the DP?

Had one 5050 that likes to scan ledger as well, the flourescent light was right in the sensor's face.

      Poor lil guy was blinded.

You're idea is valid, jmaister, but not applicable here. If it was DP related at all, scanning OC (from the glass) would work correctly. ES-OGT says that the original is properly identified in the DP tray, yet changes size during the scan. If it was a DP length sensor issue, the original would incorrectly identify the size in the tray before scanning.

Personally I would suspect the original width sensors or CCD, especially since it happens with the DP disconnected. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.

Wondering if the machine will "ask" for the correct size paper to be inserted if he leaves only 81/2x11 in the machine... I just noticed this thread is a week old... oh well, doing this will let us know for sure that it is the size sensors in the scanner.

I suspect that the black actuator that contacts doc feeder to detect it is closed has popped into machine

                We have a winner!!

I was actually coming back on to say we found the problem when I saw this. What happened is the black oval piece on the doc feed that pushes the actuator down was missing. I mean not even there and I never noticed it. It took another tech looking at it for about 30 mins to realize what the problem was.

Big duh on my part but lesson learned.
