How to implement key counter interface to copy terminal?

Hi,

I'm a electronic student and right now I'm developing a copy terminal (user can release print job via the terminal etc). After a while, I realized that certain copier has a function called Key Counter Interface that can lock/unlock the copier via the terminal.

After some research, I still do not fully understand how it works and how to implement this function to my electronic board. If someone has a example implementation or explication, I'll be very grateful.

All manufactures probably don't do it the same. Most are pretty simple, in my experience. I believe the Ricoh units use a four wire system. In generic form you only need a signal to activate/defeat the key counter message, output line/s to run the counter on the external counter (depends on your setup) and possibly an activation signal from the key counter unit to the copier.
