Located in my home. Temperature and humidity are quite constant.

Agree that even the best parts of the copy are "imperfect", but I would be satisfied if it were all uniform.

Maybe scanning to make a .JPG for the post is partly to blame for the appearance?

If I understand you correctly, you are talking about this mirror. How could I tell if it is out of position? My thought is that a problem there would not cause the type of copy I am seeing.

Does this "sky shot" help anyone with a diagnosis? This really seems indicative of a drum problem, but the drum is brand new. (Again, the orientation of the copy is such that the long axis of the paper aligns with the rear side of the machine.)

When you remove the dev unit and turn it by hand. Is the mag roller and brush even the whole length or is it weak (flat or depleted) in the area thats white on the sky shot?

Upon further review it appears to look like poor charging (poor transfer would still produce an image of a sort although it would be faded badly.. is your charger seated properly in/on the drum unit? Anything contaminating it? Looks like poor charge (most likely) or poor xfer, (less likely), i'd go after the charging since you had the drum out.

            Regards!

Appears to me to be quite uniform across the roller, and around the roller's circumference as I turn it manually.

(Sky shot shown for reference as it would have traveled through the machine.)

I have cleaned this sensor recently (~10 copies ago). It is obviously dirty again! I think this is a symptom of a larger problem -- a very high rate of toner transfer to the waste bottle. What could cause this?

I appreciate everyone's help with this. I'm sure it is frustrating dealing with an amateur! I will work through all of your suggestions.

I would still say to recheck your charging/xfer system... that symptom looks like telltale lack of charge and/or xfer to me.

                      Regards!

Getting better! Cleaned the first and third mirrors, and this made a drastic difference. Obviously, when I said I had cleaned all the optics, I had lied. Previously, I did not even understand where these mirrors were located inside my machine.

I have everyone here to thank for this. The copy quality has improved from "useless" to "useful". There is still a light area on my sky shot, and this can be seen on my test page as a poor-quality area. I will continue to try to improve the output.

                          Now two questions:

Where can I get some sort of test sheet?

Where can I obtain OEM Panasonic parts for this machine? I have been buying from Precision Roller, but they do not sell "hinges" for the cover.
