[Misc] Scan to email over SSL

I’ve been fooling around lately trying to become comfortable with configuring scan to email with SSL.
I’ve only set it up a couple of times, and it’s always just been on my own home office machine.
I have an issue at a client’s office that I feel I need to configure with SSL, because a recent installation of Office 365 is causing the current configuration to be flagged as spam.
I’ve had them configured using my own company mail server for about a year now, and it’s been perfect until last week. I tried another couple of non-ssl options that I often use, and they all get flagged now for some reason.
I’ve had similar instances at other locations like this recently too (maybe we can get into them later on )

Here’s the credentials I’ve entered, and “yes” I’m sure about the passwords, etc, because I can log into their online mail account with them

    Smtp Server: smtp.office365.com
    Port: 587
I’ve entered the proper auth email, username, and P/W for the account and turned “On” SSL in the SMTP server menu of the copier.

The error message is simply "connection with the destination has failed..."

I’m currently just testing this on an MP301 I have at home and trying to get it working, before going to the customer’s office to configure their MP 3352, so (probably a stupid question), is there any reason that I wouldn’t be able to scan using their credentials if it’s not on their network? I don’t see why it should matter.

I have the machine working over SSL using both my Gmail account, and my company mail server accounts.

Is there a specific site certificates that needs to be installed for Office 365? (Those are confusing to me too)

I’ve seen several threads relating to SSL, but in trying to piece them all together, I’ve still been unable to get this working with the office365 server.

I’ve looked at the system log, but as usual, it might as well be written in Swahili, for all that it means to me .

I can upload it if anyone thinks it might help.

    Thanks for any advice!

Office365 actually uses TLS, though setting the port to 587 on relatively recent machines works because TLS is supported. On older units you might be able to set the port but only SSL is used.

I find Office 365 to be a total PITA. I have been lucky but coworkers call me all the time. Do make sure the 'administrator' address is the same as the one used for authentication and enter the full email address in both authentication fields, not just the user name.

      Oh man!
Now I do feel like a BFD!
That was it, Jason...The Administrator email! I was still just using my own, since it was my own machine. But I suppose I didn't really think it would make a difference. Usually I don't have an issue as long as the Admin Email is a real email address.

      Thanks for that!

For a little more clarity, maybe since it is from Microsoft:

Multiple options in case your MFP does not support TLS.

Thanks Tim. I did find that article in my research. I just overlooked the stupid Admin email part

Yes I use gmail on my MPC305 at home, smtp.gmail.com on port 465
You can use any admin email address.
Also one extra step you need to log into that gmail account & turn on "Allow less secure apps"

Thanks, but as I said in my initial post, I already had Gmail, and another ssl account working.
The issue, as Zed pointed out, was that with Office 365 you can't use just any email address for admin (that was my problem). It must match the Auth email

Re: Scan to email over SSL

In an effort to better understand this SSL/ TLS stuff, I've been fooling around on my MP301, and I thought I'd revisit this thread and ask a couple of questions:

1: is it absolutely necessary to install the correct Certificate depending on which email host is being used ? Ie: Google, Microsoft, etc?
Because, once I got this working on my own machine with the Google Certificate, I was able to use the encrypted settings for either my Gmail, or my Hosting provider

2: I also uninstalled the certificate in an effort to disable the function, but it continues to scan over SSL/TLS without issue. I even went so far as doing a Full Memory clear, so this confuses me even further.

I appreciate any insight I can get.

I have never needed to install any certificate, though there was some information floating about some time ago related to doing so.

A-ha....so apparently all the issues I had trying to figure out how get it to work in the first place, lead back to the simple "admin email" tip that you gave me earlier.

                      Thanks again, Jason.

When the GW+ controller first came out, the early models with it did require that you install a certificate in order for SMTP over SSL to work. Later models already have a certificate installed. I have also encountered problems on some of the early models with the certificate expiring.

IIRC, those issues were ultimately addressed via firmware.

Machines that do not have the GW+ controller cannot be updated by firmware to use SMTP over SSL. Hardware does not support it.

I was speaking to the issue related to certificates, not wether SSL is supported or not.
