    Ricoh SP3510 stuck "processing"

    Good morning/afternoon everyone,

I've got a customer who has the above printer, which they only use for FAX and COPY. It isn't hooked up to be printed to. The symptom is that the screen is constantly saying "processing" but there aren't any noises indicating that the machine is running. I'm figuring it may be a fax job that is stuck in memory. However, I have tried turning it off, and back in both with and without the fax line plugged in and I've also tried the cancel job button but it just beeps at me.

Unfortunately, we aren't trained with Ricoh's; it wasn't the technical teams decision to take over a brand we've got no training on, but I'd like to get this sorted for the customer.

Does anyone have some ideas? I'll take anything at this point.

    Cheers!

EDIT: It just occurred to me that the Print Cartridge is also at End of Life. Although it has been like that for a number of weeks, this particular "stuck" issue only started yesterday. Do drum cartridges have a Life-Stop counter?

I have seen this a couple of times on this model, I tried updating the firmware, no luck, after a reboot the machine would work for a few hours then lock up again, mine too was not on a network. In the end replaced the controller board each time this has been the fix.

You could try replacing the cartridge nothing to loose.

What I've seen most often is, getting trained on the machine usually fixes it.

Does it have two paper trays? Check for missing interlock actuator

          Single tray.

We'd also like more training on the machines we are actually advertising we service (KonMon/HP/Kyo), but that hasn't happened in a few years. We, as techs, don't control the credit card. I don't like working on machines I'm not trained on, but it's not my choice.

Cheers. I'll suggest this to The Man. Maybe if he's hesitant to fork out for these parts, he might upgrade them to something we know how to fix.

If there is a pending fax job, clear it. Here's why that will probably work -

The machine is connected to a non-standard VOIP line, or

(sorry, this is going to be kind of long)

Back in the day when fax machines first came out, there was a set amount of internal memory for the actual fax language. The first few years, fax communications were not that complicated, so the language only used half the allotted memory, the rest being saved for future enhancements. Good manufacturers cleared the unused portion, but crap manufactures left random nonsense there.

Flash forward to today, and there are all sorts of enhanced features that communicate from the formerly unused memory. Older machines from good manufacturers will be slow to communicate with newer fax machines due to their slower modems, but will otherwise work. Older machines from crap manufacturers however will send random nonsense to newer machines, which can cause wrong and stupid things to happen.

I have encountered something similar to what you are experiencing from both of those issues, but only on older machines, so I'm not sure what to do there other than clear the pending fax job. So use the following suggestion at your own peril: I used to at least turn off ECM if I couldn't get the problems external to the machine corrected, that seemed to help most of the time.

                Hello

machine should not be stuck in the start up process irrespective of whether there is tone in the machine or not.

It should either be 1 of 2 things that is causing the problem from my past experiences with the same problem.

                1) Your hard drive is faulty. Change hard drive and check if that corrects it. If you don't have another hard drive try just disconnecting the 1 that's currently installed and starting up. Also check your RAM modules, maybe try removing them and starting the machine up.

                2) Change your controller board.

                Those should do the trick.

The SP3510 does not have a hard drive.

The machine is not stuck at startup. It is stuck processing a job.

Sorry about that guys, I seem to have confused this machine with a med-high volume machine (picture

attached). In those machiness if you have these problems you check the hard-drive, RAM, controller.

                        Sorry again about that.

                          Remove the Ethernet Cord
                          Turn off the printer
Turn on the printer wait until the printer gets to Ready
                          Connected the Ethernet Cord

                          Printer worky again?????

                            Processing...

It's probably a received fax that's got stuck, I've fixed a load of these 34xx and 35xx for the same problem.

                            • Loosen off the screws on the main PCB and move it towards you until you feel the fax PCB connector pop off the back.
                            • Power up the machine with the fax PCB disconnected. (Processing... should be gone now).
                            • Update the firmware.
                            • Re-connect the fax PCB.
                            • Knowledge not shared, is eventually knowledge that becomes lost... like tears in the rain.
