What tyoe of SD card I need to update a MP2851 ? Manual doesn't say

I have the firmware files to update a Ricoh MP2851 and I'm after a SD card for this,
the service manual doesnt mention characteristics for this card, I've already read that
for old ricohs you use a SD of 128Mb, however this kind of old stuff is hard to get by,
and I dont know if its the same needed for this newer ricohs,

    Thanks for your answers.

TONS of threads on this topic.
I don't know the specific size limit. I think it may be 2Gb, but I generally stick to 1Gb and smaller

2GB cards are not all the same. I have had machines that were supposed to work with 2GB cards that would work with manufacturer's 2GB card and fail with a different one. Like Sandy, I like to stick to 1 GB cards or 512 MB. If you have troble getting 1GB cards, use a utility such as MiniTool Partition Manager to re partition a larger one. MiniTool Partition Manager

Easier away for (all) SD-Cards....put in in slot 2...then on panel systemsetting, admintools, backuptools addressbook,format.....and you have a function sd-card.

One major problem. SD card must be inserted into slot 2, service slot, with power off. If the size of the SD card is too large, the MFP will error when you turn power on.

Recommended SD card format software is the Panasonic SD card format utility for cards to be used for firmware updates.

              Hi,

We have used these Transcend 2gb SD cards for years with Ricoh MFP's (SDHC card's are not supported.)

Firmware files should be stored in \romdata\ folder and never copier models support also firmware packages, those files goes in to \package\ folder.

Spoton comment from Slimslob, it has always worked for me with the Panasonic. I have a 16gig card that's been partitioned with 4gig space that use for my machines firmware updates. It works perfectly.

                Greetings.

are difficult to find, I bought a 2gb on amazon, another 1gb I recovered from an old car navigator that I threw away, format with windows, create "romdata" folder with the file inside, and use slot 2 , otherwise try if it is supported by "ricoh firmware update tools" that you find with google, so you give us feedback if it is supported

I think there has to be something with the sd cards. Don't know why some work some don't. I've used the panasonic utility etc. I've tried everything with various cards. The one that has consistently worked for me though is really odd, it is my go to card. It is a 16gb, formatted to 16gb fat32. It is a PNY micro-sd card in an adapter. That sucker has never failed in any machine that I have used it in. Try and explain that. It makes no sense to me either. I had a 2gb kingston about 5 years ago, never worked at all. I also have an 8gb SanDisk class 4 that doesn't work at all. I have not tried to partition to 2 gb though. Slot 2 is a must though.
                        I've proved mathematics wrong. 1 + 1 doesn't always equal 2.........

Any card you use has to be configured as FAT as opposed to Ex-FAT, NTFS, or any other proprietary format. FAT 32 has a maximum partition size of 4 GB so any card larger than that needs to be formatted to that size, with anything else left unformatted. Also remember to use the true values for the size of 4096 MB when formatting.

The older models generally like smaller cards as it allows them to more easily read the entire partition during the boot process.

The best place to find smaller cards is actually camera shops as many older digital cameras also can't use larger cards.

For older machines I have ended up formatting some of my old Java cards as they are the perfect size. Finding smaller cards on ebay amazon costs upto $20 a piece.
If it works, don't touch it.

A good place to get used smaller SD cards is from old machines coming back in from the field when new machines are placed.
