Which finisher? Do not want to give you information for the wrong finisher.

Could be a defective motor. The only 2 motors in the staple unit area are P/N: D5865640 and D6865630.
Could be that the stapler unit is not moving freely and is putting extra load on the motor.
Defective Home Position Sensor for the stapler unit.

Check if the SC occurs by opening/closing covers, and input/output check. If the SC occurs again, do the following steps.
      Check
if the SC reoccurs by cycling the power after each step
      .
The target parts are the motor and related HP sensor that SC occurred.
      1. Check if the connector of the target part is connected securely. Reconnectthe connector if it is disconnected, or loose.
      2. Check the harness for the target part. Replace the harness if it is disconnected, or damaged.
      3. Check in input and output modes if the motor runs, sensors turn OFF/ON, has no overloads, and is properly driven. Replace the parts if there are any defects.
      4. Check
if there are any signs of a short circuit. Replace the parts if there are any defects.

I've read that it can be caused by to wires going to the stapler pulling loose, caused from the stapler going back and forth. Sometimes the harness is a little short and pulled too tight.

If you have the C5504 service manual both the motor and the retreat sensor are shown in the Stapler displacement mechanism portion of the section on the finisher. I hope that is one of the motors you ordered. The sensor could also be the problem.

Check if the lock pin is bend (the one holding the unit locked when paper jammed).

I'll give the stapler harness a +1, we had quite a few ones going faulty

There is a little metal pin/pahl holding the entire drawer locked, when machine runs. This pin can be bend and cause sc721-42

Yes, if this is bend it can get caught the black plastic things and make this error.
