Re: Windows XP Drivers for current machines
Ignore the negativity and use the advice that's been given from those of us willing to help.
I've worked with everything from CNC equipment, heavy truck test systems, flow cytometers and electron microscope controllers. Never seen a different print driver kill the software. 90% of what these systems output is pure text and basic images.

Re: Windows XP Drivers for current machines
Just because someone posts here doesn't mean it's reliable.
We NEVER install universal printer drivers. Or recommended them EVER
Printer drivers are specfic for each model.
We all know what happens if you have the WRONG print driver.
But it's ok that's how we make money on IT service calls fixing problems.
I've had pretty good luck listening to slim on subjects much more complicated than this one. If universal drivers are NEVER to be used, then WHY were made in the first place? That doesn't make a lot of sense does it?
I decided to get on the ol' internet to find out for myself.
Here's what I found:
A Universal Print Driver enables printers of different ages and models to work together under a single, standardised solution. Also referred to as the 'generic' solution, it removes the need to install or manage individual drivers for each printer you use.

Re: Windows XP Drivers for current machines
Perhaps it's not so wise to use the word ALWAYS & NEVER.
I've found that when I use them that it ALWAYS comes back to bite me in the ass and NEVER results in a good outcome for me.Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment

Re: Windows XP Drivers for current machines
I’ve never been afraid to experiment with different drivers.
Never broken anything yet.
The days of getting a 500 page PostScript dump when sending PS to a non-PS machine are gone. The controllers are smart enough to reject it.
About 15 years ago I had a customer with 2 Canon iR330 machines that printed a ton of real estate finance documents.
The void areas cut off needed image, and made the prints unusable. We almost lost the customer.
I installed an HP LJ5 Mopier driver on the print server and shared it out.
Botta boom, botta bing, as they say. No more fat void areas. Problem solved.
Sorry, Billy...I used “never”, twice.“I think you should treat good friends like a fine wine. That’s why I keep mine locked up in the basement.” - Tim HawkinsComment

Re: Windows XP Drivers for current machines
Many years ago the accountant that the company I worked for got a Panasonic Laser printer when the HPLJ1 he had died. Worked great with everything except his tax preparation software. With it random characters were being dropped. The software people said that they would not help unless it was an actual HP printer bought from them. Since the current model HP was the Laser Jet II I installed that driver and it worked fined.Comment

he's is rude .. obnoxious..condescending. WHY DO WE NEED him here? He rarely offers good advice, and pushes FTP over something useful.Comment

I have worked with IT professionals from independent to those at local offices for major US corporations and none will allow FTP hosting to be used on any computer on their networks. Creates too big a back door for hackers to come in through.Comment

If y'all really think about it...the only thing that's important is that I learned something from this thread.
What I learned is that a universal driver has it's place and I won't be scared to use it.
Seriously, though, lots of good info in this thread.Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment
