Sounds like you might want to replace the HDD. That should do the trick.

First breathe in through your nose and out throught your mouth and calm down. It's just a Ricoh and they do this.

Did ya check the charge roller contacts? They can be a pain like that too.

Try disconnecting the hdd before formatting it to see if this is the case.

I had a couple where the memory DIMM was causing SC 990's.

Also firmware can be the problem as a 990 is a software error.

Relax! This firmware injection won't hurt...but it will take 45 minutes.

Sounds like you are on to the problem when you say it clears up after you clean the PCU. How many copies are on the drum? If it has 150K or close to it, the drum is toast and it will pop 990's until the cows come home. These machines do not run beyond their copy rating for drums.

A good way to tell if it's the drum or not is if it pops the 990 after a copy run or during it. If it is during the run, it may be a firmware problem. If it pops after completing a copy run it is probably the drum since that is when the machine tries to develop the ID patch on the drum for process control purposes. There is also info contained on the service report relating to the 990 code which indicates its origin.
