Funny you should mention this, because I was just about to come here and post a thread on this very topic.

Our owners just came back form the Savin Conference in Florida (USA) and was told by a very reliable source that a lot of tech have been using RainX to solve this problem.

    Ok, here's the skinny...

If you clean a coated mag roller with an abrasive, you will wipe off the coateing that is applied at the factory, not to mention decrease the diameter of the roller in a very uneven fashion. This is not good and lead to all sorts of problems.

So, what you should do is clean the mag roller with a chemical such as alcohol, Fedron, or SD-20, depending on the time you have to spare - Then coat the clean mag roller with RainX. Make sure it's dry and carry out your normal procedures from there.

Our owners were told that techs have been getting around 250k service life out of the developer with no toner waste (blowing) after performing this procedure. Also, bearing in mind that this fix is with a standard OEM mag roller and not one of the updated ones. This could save a lot of dealerships a ton of money if it works! I will be trying it out on a in house machine next week. Of course the long term results will not be posted for a long time, but...

Have you tried this out yet with the RainX? Has anyone else actually done this with success?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is rainX and which if any of the variations should be used.

Many thanks in anticipation of a reply

Rainx - You know, the stuff you wipe on your windsheild (windscreen) to repel rain and water.

Would optics cleaner not do the same job?

Anyway as far as I know the new dev and toner will be out at the end of March.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

              Hit it.

The end of March? This problem has been going on since early 2007 if not longer. I've got so many of these puking toner all over the place it's ridiculous. We're doing all the updates per the bulletins, replacing mag rollers, replacing dev units. The only thing that works is putting the B079 supplies in the machines and I can't get the ok to do that from those holding the purse strings.

Am I the only one that thinks over 2 years for a concrete solution is incredibly inept and unacceptable on the part of Ricoh? We've already had customers state they aren't buying another one of our machines. It makes the service departments look bad and there's nothing we can do to fix it.

Ya know what, I have a medium population of these in the field and so far have only had a couple that puked out toner. I learned the hard way from the short time with Toshita (yes, I mean to spell it that way!) color machines that with a smooth surface mag roller it was a bad idea to use anything abrasive when cleaning. I use alcohol and then a light wipe of Brillianize and it worked wonders on the toshita so I carried this practice over to the Ricoh when the mag rollers changed. That process used in conjuction with the TSB's has made my machines run well in the field. Didn't even think about this until you mentioned the RainX idea. Should have spoken up sooner I guess, just never thought about it because I've been doing it for so long its just second nature to me. When I see these models on service calls its a simple process to pull the Dev unit and wipe some of the developer aside on the mag roller...if there is a build up I clean it, apply the Brillianize (let it dry) and make sure the TSB settings have been set.

Could it be that some of us have created more problems by using ScotchBrite to clean the Dev rollers? I did in the beginning on the Toshita 3500C series.

Relax! This firmware injection won't hurt...but it will take 45 minutes.

Brillianize is great stuff! I just wish I could get the other guys at our company to use it for more than just cleaning optics. Anyway, I was asked if Brillianize work as well, but I didn't know. Thanks for answering that one for me.

Makes sense the Toner im led to belive contains to much wax which bulids up.
If we scratch off all the non stick coating on the mag roller.

Like many I was always told only use a abrasive pad as a last result with the metal rollers in copiers as normally your taking off some form of coating or affecting the surface creating pits or grooves etc .

That's what I was told as well while I was in Atlanta a week and a half ago for Phase III.

At the Thursday night dinner, I was sitting at the same table as the head of Tech Support and his number two. Every single tech at the table was bending their ears at some point during the night, and this was one of the questions that was brought up. The new toner should be out end of March/beginning of April according to them.
