Aficio MP C5000 shows 'Printing...' and nothing happens. OSX / PS

Dear copytechnet - I hope you all are well.

We recently acquired an Aficio MP C5000 in working order, which lacked the PS driver. We bought a used SD-card from ebay with the driver that seemed to install correctly.

Copier works good, together with the scanner.

We can add the printer through Bonjour, but when we try to print the print job seems to clear from the OSX print cue, but the machine reports 'Printing...' in the web gui, but no jobs on the queue on the printer or in the web gui. No errors in the logs either.

Any clue what we could check more?

    A big thanks in advance.

    Best wishes,
    Erik

if you install the machine in a Windows environment using the PCL driver does it work? If so it could be a bad PS card or a slightly twitchy HDD.

All your firmware is so far behind what is current that I'm surprised the machine even boots up!

I can't imagine it printing from a modern OSX version.

Try printing PostScript from a Windows PC, if one is available, with the oldest version of Windows you may have at your disposal.

At least if that works, you'll know the PS card is working.

You didn't get any strange licensing error messages when you installed the card, did you? If you did, the card was not properly removed from its previous "home", and will not work. The machines serial number gets recorded on the card, and is impossible to remove manually, at least that I am aware of. Proper uninstallation does remove the serial number. That's the issue you run into with used PS cards.

hi, unfortunately I have a cold that never goes away ...LOL... anyway, if you go to user tools> printer menu, does the PS menu appear? ... otherwise you have to do as KenB says...

looks like the joke they make when PS is missing, data light blinks for a while, and then stops, and nothing happens

Usually if you print with the PS driver and your machine doesn't have PS, then the machine will print a bunch of garbage till it runs out of paper.

If the data light flashes but nothing comes out, it sounds like User Authentication is turned on, check it in User tools, Admin settings. Turn it off.

Download the "RICOH Firmware Update Tool" from the Ricoh print driver site, update the firmware.

Try printing with the PCL driver.

Also, I somehow doubt the update tool will work on a model this old, but I guess it’s worth a shot.

Lastly, Macs don’t print PCL, at least not the way you’d like them to.

right, the only metod for test if the SD are operative, its if the PS menu' appaer....at this point...go to firmware, and if it still doesn't work ... maybe it was unfortunate, a broken SD are arrived, or it was too old and weak, and it failed in transport ... those damn easily fail ... i throw away by the dozen!

Try adding the machine by IP instead of Bonjour. Also try getting all of the firmware on the machine up to date. Check in User Tools under Printer Settings, in PostScript options there should be an option to turn on error reporting (it's off by default), which will give you an error page if a job fails.

Is the environment all Mac or are there Windows machines as well? If there's a Windows print server you can always set up the Mac to work with that.

I, I see that there is still no feedback, regarding the SD card (purchased on ebay) is working, or not?

Actually they do. It is called their Generic PCL printing It is available with all OSx, just sometimes hard to find. I've setup a few. Older versions of OSx did not support color. Newer did but did not allow you to pick if you wanted color. They may by now have added the ability to chose if you wanted color but still had no way to work with User Authentication. For that you need the PS3 option on the C5000 and the proper PPD Installer from Ricoh loaded on the Mac. Without the PPD Installer the Mac does not know how to properly use the paper trays, duplex or sort,

TonerMunkeh mentioned it in the first reply.

With a used PS3 card there are three possible things that can happen:
                          1. The card works properly
                          2. You get an error message when the C5000 is turned on
                          3. The SD card is bad or has been erased and the C5000 acts the same as it did without the SD card in it.

In the case of #2, there are, if I remember correctly, 3 files that need to be deleted from the SD card. There are a number of threads on doing so.

Wow - thanks a lot for the massive feedback!

I can report the following: I've managed to update all the firmware with the Ricoh Firmware Update tool. Quite a few reboots, but seems fine.

PCL printing from a win10 works great.

PS printing from win10 doesn't work - the same "error" as from a osx-box, the printer says 'printing ...', but the job queue is empty and the only way I can clear it is by a hard reset / reboot.
