SC542-02 is a fusing unit error. To prevent further damage to the machine the error must be reset through the Service Program.
Turn the main switch Off then On
    Execute SP5-810-1
Turn the main switch Off then On

If the error returns then the cause has not been corrected.

    SC542-02 rear thermostat open.

the -02 codes require a hard reset by pico fuse, you'll need to find & replace the pico fuse, usually near the blue fuser to m/c connector, and do 5-810-02 reset on it

Not worked on the C5300 personally but with Ricoh the reset fuse comes with new fusing sleeve or unit, you can't buy it as a separate item from Ricoh. You could try Google, you may be lucky and find one that works.

But if you did not clear the error with the correct Service Program procedure the error will still be stored in memory. As for the pico fuse, they only come with a new fusing assembly from Ricoh, often taped to the bottom of the inside of the box. The only thing you will find is an empty connector where it needs to be plugged in. Also with some models one of the jam doors needs to be open when the SP is executed.

Yes. The fuse is not needed when replacing a sleeve as part of a scheduled maintenance service and since I had to make very few repairs that required one I had quite a collection in my tool bag.

I don’t think this range of machines has a pico fuse.

Check the thermopiles with a multi meter.
