Ricoh SP 8400 Mono Printer splitting up large print jobs

Hello, have a customer with the SP 8400 (11" x 17") mono printer.
When he send a large print job of say five sets it does not always print the complete sets one at a time.
It prints partial sets and then prints the rest of the document after that. So he has to hand assemble them when the printing is done.
The RAM is 2GB and not upgradable.
If he gets the optional 320GB Hard Drive will that take care of the problem?
I don't want to sell him one and then it does not help. I haven't sold a HDD drive for this model yet.

2GB should be enough memory. I would look more at the driver and port being used. Also check the print settings on the 8400, buffer size, auto continue, error recover. If it has an external finisher, the cover switches have been know to malfunction and interrupt print jobs

You don't really need to "sell" him a HDD to test it. Borrow one and the cables from another machine, format it then temporarily fit it. Then test the print job. If it sorts it, fantastic.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

      Hit it.

I agree with fellow Slimslob, check the driver and the printing parameters.

If the device has a finalizer attached, it could cause problems in long work. Check door sensors.

Rare question What format is the document? Some versions of PDF can cause problems on devices with out-of-date firmware.

Thank you, I will check the buffer size. There is no external finisher. So the HDD does not rip the entire document - is it there for other reasons such as locked print, etc?

Thank you. I don't have another one to test though. Plus if I went through all that and it did not solve the issue the customer does not want to pay me for my time in trying.

Thank you. He is doing booklets, two up, two-sided and maybe 200-300 pages total sometimes.
I will check the firmware though.

Yes they are Adobe PDfs and they are using the correct Ricoh PCL6 driver, I set it up for them on delivery. I am going out this week and will make sure all of the suggestions are followed and report back Thank you again.

There 3 PCL6 drivers on the Ricoh download page for the SP 8400. If it was V4 or for Universal Print, wrong driver.

Thank you, yes, I am aware of that driver. I guess that driver is for some models but I don't know which. I have seen where the newer HP high end printers require a V4 and won't print well without it.

Does the machine have the Postscript option installed? I'd be curious if you got a different result using it.

I don't really get the problem - what happen if the printer appearently "paused" a job? Does other print jobs jump in and they have to puzzle it out?

Are you 100% shure that the pages that are suppose to be "one job" are really "one job" print queue wise? I've had many cases in wich the clients software was not able to ensure that a "multiple page job" was transfered as "one job" to the printer so it was already sent as multiple jobs in to the spooler queue.
