i guess the machine has a strong fluorecent lamp on top of it, or the light is directly on the optics so every scanning it absorb the light.... try to move the machine.

Yeah that does totally look like a neon room illumination above the copier. Switch out all lights and run a test copy with cover open again...Comment

This may sound too simple....Are you saying that this ONLY shows up on sky shots? Or does it show up with the cover down and large solids? The reason I ask this is that you say it does not show on text. I have seen this Exact pattern on sky shots when there is a florescent lamp above the copier. I may be just talking out of my butt again.
