Question on dual hard drive machines

On machines with dual hard drives (let's say the MPC4500 for example), Ricoh wants to sell the hard drives as a single unit--> B2235090 Hard Drive Unit. They want an arm and a leg for this unit (2 common hard drives mounted in the bracket) for the OUTRAGIOUS COST OF 670.07!!!

I have been lucky enough not to have to change any drives in these machines yet. So my question is: When the time comes, is there any reason why I couldn't just aquire 2 like hard drives at the same capacity or a little larger, and use them?

I appreciate any opinions from you Ricoh Masters out there who have experience with this?

Thank you very much in advance!!

Not sure on DUAL HD machines, but can't see why you just can't get another HD same size.

The TASKalfa CS-500ci has dual hard drives and they also are sold as a pair. The reasoning I heard in class was that they are somehow selected for compatability. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

on the Toshiba side (actually a ricoh) the reason is that it is a raid set that needs to be set up at factory and not able to be done in the field.
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

Similar to what Spock said, I've heard that they are formatted in a way that there is something on them from the factory that the machine looks for to boot.

I have replaced quite a few HDD's, and have never purchased them from Ricoh (too pricey) get one from a local source. As regards size, I have replaced 40gb with 80gb etc with no probs. As long as they are not smaller you should have no issues

Dont do drugs unless you have enough for everyone. It is important for us all to stay in phase.

On the subject tho, the dual drives, as mentioned, are in a RAID array and must be replaced as a pair and not just any pair, OEM.
I too have replaced many single drives with off the shelf but this wont work with the dual drives.

Yes I agree always replace the two together, but I have never had to replace with OEM ones, just off the shelf, about a fifth of price

There was a previous post on here some time ago. Cipher has changed them with non oem hard drives with success. Have a read through it if its any help.

On the pro906ex Raid SATA 160gb drives. I have replaced them with 2 same size Western digital caviar drives Model wd1600AAJS and formatted them and had they worked fine.

Was having HDD error's with an MP9000 dual drive m/c. Machine was down and needed to get it running. I ended up just swapping the SATA cables and the machine was up and running again. Doc server stuff gone but everything was working. That was about a year ago and have not had the problem again.

What about the 4 hdd assembly like in venus?

What you can do is that you can reblace the first failure with an original assembly and then use the good parts from that unit to fix other cases.
Normally one hdd from the unit is defective.
