Check the developer unit. You may have blockage under the doctor blade. There should be developer fully coating both upper and lower mag rollers. Use the mylar cleaning tool to clean the back of the blade described in your service and parts manual. DO NOT remove the white painted screws.

You can rule out the optics since an internal counter page has the problem.

Oh and also check your laser slit glass which sits above and slightly to the right of the drum unit.

Relax! This firmware injection won't hurt...but it will take 45 minutes.

Is there a clutch which "cams in" the developer unit to contact the drum?

If so, and if it is slipping, it will cause uneven pressure, which creates a gap, resulting in uneven prints.

Nope, no cam in mechanism, how bout the charger unit.. I know that usually the cleaner unit will cause black lines if not @ home but just worth a look regardless.. also is the xfer belt unit properly locked in? Both springs (iirc) under the belt in place? ..
          Food for thought!

          Regards!

Is it possible to stop a print midstream, and check to see if there is a good image on the drum?

If there is, then it's a transfer problem, like you mentioned.

I agree try a sky shot and stop it half way to see what the image is like on the drum, probably easiest with 11x17 on that machine due to it's speed though!
