    Ricoh fax 3900l

Hi, all. I know this is the copier forum, but if your like me you have to work on everything. This fax machine has an intermittant problem. Every couple of weeks the machine will stop receiving faxes and the display will ask to program the paper sizes in the trays. This machine has the extra tray installed on it. After I reprogram the trays, it will work fine for a while. I brought the machine into the shop and blew it out and cleaned the sensors but the problem remains. Has anyone ran into this before?

Never seen one do this. Definitely an older model. Sounds like some sort of memory is not retaining its settings.

If it was me I'd say reflash firmware. Wonder if their is a Battery that effects it retaining settings.

Unfortunately firmware update is not an option in this case. Even if I could locate the firmware for this machine, you have to have a special software copy tool to dowmload from the flash card. Battery is a possibility. I'll check that out.

        Have you tried

Have you tried the internet fax service? It's very easy to use and it's reliable and very convenient. I use Popfax.com and I like it. It offers 3 years of subscription for the price of two. It's available worldwide and you can save lots of money and time with it.

Sounds like a paper feed clutch. The machine pulls 1st sheet but since the clutch gets stuck it pulls another in between. The machine sees the paper as a longer paper size so you get a wrong paper size message.

Is this like the RF2000/1800/1900 engine?

Usually this is a sensor issue - that was pretty common in combination with exatly this symtome. Usually the reg and/or fuser exit sensor tends to force the problem. The fuser exit sensor is easy to replace. The reg sensor can be replaced without disassembling the engine-frame out of the paper feed housing (that would be by the book) but it's an extremely fiddly job. - take care not to hang out the actuator and ....have fun

Cleaning sensors didn't helped a lot on these machines iirc.

Before I brought the machine in and blew it out, they WERE getting intermittant misfeeds at the reg sensor as well as the originally posted problem. If the problem returns, I will try replacing the reg sensor. Not looking foward to that. I'll update this post later if I need to.

And as a tech, how do we monitize that? Thanks for the help!

I know that this is an ancient thread, but I came up with a solution for this problem.

There is a mechanical one-way clutch fitted to the right end of the registration roller. On my machine that clutch was sticking. Disassembly and cleaning helped, but did not cure. A drop or two of light oil did the trick. This one-way is no fun to get to. Surprisingly these one-way parts are still available. It must be a common problem. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

As this happened over a year ago, and I have slept since then, I'm a little fuzzy about the particulars. I think we ended up upgrading them. Thanks for the info on the fix, though.
