[CQ] Odd colour printing, Ricoh 1232C

I have a Ricoh/Aficio 1232C and am getting problems on colour printing. On A3 the magenta only prints about half of the page - although the distance is variable over different copies. If I print in single colour magenta, the whole page prints ok. - see attachment
I'm also getting black smearing along the rhs of an A4 sheet, not sure if this is related or not.

It's just had a new PCU, so that's not the problem.
    Any ideas?

Oddly enough there seems to be many Tech bulletins for this machine though none mention the height of the cliff or the appropriate force required??

The issue could be Dev pooled up on one side of the magenta unit, take it out and gently shake it from side to side to see if it evens up. Or as Tb007a states

        SYMPTOM
A blank area may appear on one side of the image (development unit front or rear).
        CAUSE
        1.
The development unit front gears engage their mainframe counterparts slightly

        differently than the rear gears.
        2. The above condition may occur due to the shock when the old toner cartridge is
not pulled out correctly during toner replacement.
        SOLUTION
Rotate the mainframe gears manually, removing the development unit(s) on which the
symptom occurs. Then reinstall the unit (s).
