I'm working on a 1045 where every time i do a medium or big copy job, toner starts building up on the operating side of the drum. But when i do a small job the drum cleans up and there is no toner left over on the drum. The drum and drum blade are brand new out of the box. There's new developer, as well as a new fuser hot and pressure roller. I've tried re-seating the drum blade a couple of times as well as powder the new drum upon installation.

Have you checked the bare surface of the mag roller itself? Most likely it's filmed over, which acts like an insulator reducing the bias to hold back toner. This will cause backgrounding on longer runs and is a common problem. Remove the mag roller and either scrub it with something like scotchbrite (thoroughly vacuum it clean after so as not to leave any residue) or just replace it. -
When's the last time it had a new charge roller? Don't replace any parts in the PCU on the Adonis without doing ALL of them. Also, don't powder the drum when putting it back in. Charge rollers don't like it.It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

Its either A.
A faulty cleaning blade (that lets toner build up on the charge roller)
Or B. They mag roller is caked with toner.
If B you can tell by opening the side cover and the drum will have faint toner on it (usually on the front side) (somtimes on the back side.)
If it is B. Take out the dev. take out the mag roller. Clean the mag roller with a cloth and laquer thinner and it will be as good as new.Comment

Better yet, find a set of the little red plastic wedges that come in a new PCU and install them into the rebuild before installing the drum. Powder the drum and rotate it a few turns, then remove the wedges. The (end) wedges hold the roller off the drum to prevent a flat spot from forming during shipping (the center one holds up the cleaning blade, you don't want or need that one) and will keep the roller off the drum and away from any powder that the blade missed during those first couple turns.Comment

Another thing to check out is the cleaning area seals and the drum end seals. Both are prone to wear, the end seals also crush. They are available as service parts (although the 2035 and up with the little blades are not). These will make this PCU run dirty, especially if the soft mylar seal is failing.Comment

<snip> What does changing sp2210 to 5 do exactly? <snip>
When you are in service program mode(SP) enter 2-210 change the original value from 10 to 5. It is how ofter the machines does a ID sensor pattern chech. If they make few copies a day some reduse the number. If they copy a lot some increase this value.
